I'm an electrical contractor and part of my business is doing underground trench work for the main electrical lines to homes and business'.
We were doing a job last week in a subdivision that's kind of like the old meeting the new. On one side of the street it's all new homes and on the other side it's all homes that are about 40 or so years old.
As we were finishing up a job on the new side of the street a man approached me from the old side. He asked me if we would be interested in tearing out some fitzer bushes and removing the dirt to a depth of about 4" so he could put down gravel. I went over, looked at the job, gave him a price, he agreed so we scheduled it for today. The area the fitzers needed to be removed from was about 4' wide and 120' long.
We started finding neat things right off the bat under the bushes. Man, fitzers are nothing more than a neighborhood dumpster when you stop and think about it. We must have found 20 hot wheels, old jars, cans, bottles, bouncy balls and everything else you could imagine.
As I was digging some of the last fitzers out I noticed something laying there in the dirt that kinda made me go, what the??? I got off my mini ex, reached down, picked it up and it still took me a minute to register what it was.
It's a gold money clip loaded with money. There must be at least 8 or 10 bills in the clip. I was able to open it just a bit and could definitely make out two 5's under three 1's.
I don't know how much is in the for sure but I don't want to tear it up just to find out. I like it just as it is.
When I showed it to the homeowner he actually took it from me wanting to keep it for himself and then brought it back later and said, I guess since you found it you can have it, it wont do me any good. All I said was, thank you sir.

Start searching those bushes that are being torn out in your neighborhood, you never know what's been lost in there.

Pour about a gallon of distilled water into a deep flat container and let the bills soak for a bit.

holey moley thats totally awesome... so whatcha gonna do? take em to the bank and trade em in? see, good Karma comming at ya

Be careful, as that money sits out in the open air it will deteriorate more. If you want to, you can send it to the Federal Reserve in DC and they will inspect the wad and determine how much money is in there and cut you a check for the full amount. I've done this twice in the past and was happy with how they handled everything. I forget where you send it to exactly, but if you inquire to the Federal Reserve about exchanging damaged currency, you'll get the address. Every note that they can identify in the wad, as they pull it apart, will be reimbursed. I would suggest not disturbing the wad or trying to peel apart the bills anymore. The wads I sent in before were moldy and deteriorated pretty badly, but I got back nearly all of their value. Nice find! HH, Mike.

I bet that some old guy was gardening , or doing yard work, and somehow this fell out of his pants pocket, never to be found till now. GREAT FIND!

Mike is exactly right about this. I once saw a TV show where they showed the people who's job it is to meticulously pull the bills apart. They will reimburse you the full amount that they can read. They don't need the whole bill, just a section will do. You get to keep the money clip while you wait!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

It was a first for me and I doubt It'll ever happen again.

I decided to put it in our food saver and vacuum sill it. It worked good and should last forever this way.

I though about soaking and opening it like some of you suggested but then if it was ruined I'd just have the memories of it.

Welcome aboard ECOTERRY!

i think thats some of DB Coopers money check the bushes again he might be under there to great finds sparky!!!! 8)

Gosh, you deserve it!

Does the Federal Reserve reimburse you for the market value of silver certificates or do they just send you an equivalent today dollar amount?

dollar for dollar in paper money * sadly -- don't you wish you could turn in silver cert dollar at the "true" exchange rate for its silver dollar value --- say 90% of the current value of an oz of silver per $1 paper silver dollar note --since a silver dollar coin was 90% silver. with silver at $15 per oz -- they would be worth $13.50 each

That is soo cool, Sparky! 8) Congrats on that find!!!

Just to let you know that if the bills are in pretty bad condition and as long as you have so much percentage of the bills there is a place you can send them too where they will replace the bills with new ones. I don't have the name or address off hand. Maybe someone here will know. Great find.

So. that's got be one of the coolest finds I've ever seen. I want one.

My buddy found one at the beach about 4 years ago 5- 100 dollar bills in it . I wished it was me .. Great find   guzz1

Great find, are ya going to take on more tear out jobs in the future?

I liked the vaccum seal idea. What's $30 to $100 bucks compared to the story and the piece to tell and show.
