I was at work today and got out alittle early. I was itching to get out and decided to hit an old house in my town that used to be a tavern. Suprisingly in about 7-9 trips over the past half a yr havent produced much. The only things i have found where a silver boy scout ring ands a 1903 baber dime. I decided to hit the side of the house today hard and very slow. I was there about a 1/2 hr and got a solid quarter hit. Although it was solid it wasnt a good "bang" sorta speak so i wasnt real excited. I dug down and check the plug and hit was in it. I started to cut into the plpug when a disk fell out of the top. I grab it and new it was a large coppa, at only 1 1/2 inches no less. Since it was all caked on with dirt i wasnt able to see anything. Into the pocket it goes till later i guess. But as the time went by i was getting more and more curious. When i reached into my pocket the date was rubbed off alittle and i saw the great 7 poppin out at me. Alittle more rubbin and i was able to see 1795. Now i was real excited hoping it was American. As i rubbed more and more away i saw Miss. Libertys cap behind her head. Boy was i stoked. Ive dug many drapped bust LC's, but never a Liberty Cap Large cent. This is now my oldest American coin to date.
Thanks for lookin
Keith

For sale: Cheap Ace 250 detector used only a dozen times.

Reading today's posts you all have found all there is to detect.

I'll start a collection of Pillsbury cookbooks or something....

I was reading the Red Book and there are 3 varities on the edge, can you tell which one you found? One has letter, one has stars and bars and then there is the plain one. Just curious . . . . one is more valuable than the others. The plain edge is the most common. Good Luck.

No i never cleaned it anymore. I have gotten over 30 coppers in all and found that some you can clean up and some u cant. This is one you cant. If i where to clean it anymore it will just deterorat. If you look at the pic of the back thats what happend when i cleaned it. Over the course of the yr i have tried soap and water, electrolisis, and hot peroxide. IN all i have found if you can see some features leave it alone. Believe it or not those are the best pics i have gotten of it. It ended up being a 1795 liberty cap LC. THats another reason i didnt want to touch it. Its my one and only LIberty Cap.
THanks again for lookin.

I miss way too many posts over here, and yours was one of them.

Congrats on a 'stuff that Midwestern dreams are made of' coin! I'm trying to break the 1850 barrier. Breaking 1800 is tough to imagine.

Hey Keith...I am with you about not cleaning it. I too have messed up too many good coins by cleaning them. Especially coppers!

The temptation to clean is incredible, I'm sure; I've degraded Indians and wheats by cleaning. Congrats on a great find; I don't know how I missed it in June! Just for fun, here's a picture of a 1795 dollar; I had the privilege of holding it, but not owning it!

I dream about diggin 3 ringers all day and maybe a chest plate or buckel. Im hoping to go south over the summer and try my luck on a civil war site.
