I was at work today and got out alittle early. I was itching to get out and decided to hit an old house in my town that used to be a tavern. Suprisingly in about 7-9 trips over the past half a yr havent produced much. The only things i have found where a silver boy scout ring ands a 1903 baber dime. I decided to hit the side of the house today hard and very slow. I was there about a 1/2 hr and got a solid quarter hit. Although it was solid it wasnt a good "bang" sorta speak so i wasnt real excited. I dug down and check the plug and hit was in it. I started to cut into the plpug when a disk fell out of the top. I grab it and new it was a large coppa, at only 1 1/2 inches no less. Since it was all caked on with dirt i wasnt able to see anything. Into the pocket it goes till later i guess. But as the time went by i was getting more and more curious. When i reached into my pocket the date was rubbed off alittle and i saw the great 7 poppin out at me. Alittle more rubbin and i was able to see 1795. Now i was real excited hoping it was American. As i rubbed more and more away i saw Miss. Libertys cap behind her head. Boy was i stoked. Ive dug many drapped bust LC's, but never a Liberty Cap Large cent. This is now my oldest American coin to date.
Thanks for lookin
Keith

AWSOME!!!!!!!! That thing looks like it will clean up nice. I wanna see the finished product, as I'm sure everyone else does too!

You may think im crazy, but im going to leave it alone. As you can see i tried cleaning the back and that went to #@!$%#@!. Ive dug about 30 large coppers so far and ive tried every cleaning method under the sun, and for the most part ive found if its good enough to id and see some detail clearly, LEAVE IT ALONE. Ive ruined so many coppers by soemthing as simple as just soap and water. I see others that clean theres come out so nice, but i guess i must be doing somehtin wrong b/c it doesnt mater if its warm peroxide, water and brush, or electrolisis, all my cleanings come out worse then what i dug.

I don't blame you, I would do the same :icon_pirat:

I think that's a good call. Quite a bit of pitting happening under the patina.

Pretty lady there, I would keep it as is worth more to some people just like that. HH

that's fantastic Keith, way to go ! I think I would have to clean it up a little better. There was a post here by someone a few months ago,his/her large cents (among other things) cleaned up so nice it was unbelievable. I looked for that thread a while back but couldn't find it.Maybe some one will remember it and have better luck tracking it down then I did. One thing I wouldn't use is soap and water, not on copper.

yea i learned the hard way with soap and water. Just ask my 1788 ct copper that came out great and is now a dark slug of its former self. I get to nervous to mess with them now. If i see the date and the figure. Im a happy guy. I might be to easy to please, but ive seen the "dark side" sorta speak and dont like it. LOL

well ok,but if someone can find that thread I would appreciate it. He cleaned other copper/brass items as well like belt buckles which he showed. The reason I looked for it was i don't think he went into detail as to how long he soaked the items,I wanted to ask him.......

Keith, WOW ! what a beautiful coin . I think you're absolutley right not to clean it, unless you can

engage the services of the conservator of numismatics for the Smithsonian , and that sounds a touch

pricey to me . Just think of the early Americans who handled that coin before finally dropping it, and

now you are very much connected to them in a tangible way. Congratulations on a very special find !

DONT CLEAN IT, ITS TOO OLD AN YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE IS NOT MUCH LEFT TO SEE,
ITS AWSOME THE WAY IT IS , IF YOU TRY TO CLEAN IT IT WILL FALL APART!
CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT COIN!!

I love when you think of it like that. just imagining the last colonial american to hold it while walking in my town some 200 yrs ago, and with a cell phone in my pocket and using a machine that detects metal i come along and touch it after im. very cool to think about

I have a friend who is a famous science fiction writer. He has told me many times that I have a real, working time machine.

Congrats on your journey back in time!

I found a 1797 quarter the other day at the beach . No wait its a 1997 quarter !!!!! Congratz on you old find

Xcelent find! Those are the hard ones to come across. Keep up the good work!

Great Job Buddy. Nice date on that one.

I use a Water-Pik to gently remove surface crud. Works really nice on silver.

Great find. I think I'd still try something gentle (D.I. water) on the obverse, looks like a lot of detail their underneath the dirt. Congrats.
