Yes Folks, miracles do happen. I FINALLY dug my first SLQ in the front yard of the plantation house. Of course I had to work for it too. I was gridding off the front yard again for my 2nd time. Some of you may remember a few weeks ago,I was using a new Tesoro with a stock 8" coil the first time thru while my other one was in the shop for a tuneup. I picked up a lot of coins including silver the first go around. This time I had my old machine back with the 9x8 web coil. I got a nice smooth low tone right next to what else? A flipping large tree root!!! I dug, and dug until I swear I was about a foot deep. The signal was coming from the side between numerous roots. I finally got a vibration on my Vibra Probe, and could see a silver rim once I wiped away a bit of dirt. I about soiled myself when out popped an SLQ!!!! :o Yeah, Baby!!! ;D A beautiful (in my book) 1917 (type 2) SLQ.
Now for the bad news....I nicked it with my trowel working around all those darn roots. :'(
I am about a third thru my 2nd pass now, and also pulled up five wheats that I missed, plus some relics.
I hope there will be another silver or two before I finish this second gridding.
Here are my finds:

*1917 SLQ (type 2) - Can someone give me an idea of what one in this condition would grade out at and be worth WITHOUT the nick in it?

*Wheats: 1917 , 18D , 20 , 38 , 56D

*A buckle (era?) with "Nickel Silver" and "ModerN' on the back

*A lead seal that I believe is a railroad relic. What I can make out is "R.R. - Neuse" on the front, and "NY" on the back. There are other letters on both the front and back, but I can't make them out.
The Neuse is a river close to where I MD at, and the old depot is only a few miles away. Here's a tidbit of info on the depot:
http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM1BRP

*The butt end of what looks like a lead race car?

*A small knife keychain

*Two long brass objects that I first thought were drawer handles. I checked the patent number on them and they are actually LINE SPLICERS, with a Jan. 1939 patent date.

*A oval "O" looking decoration piece.
Any ideas on this one?

*A strange round brass piece with what looks like a large clear lens or marble on top. It has "Pat's pending" and "Signal" on the bottom.
What is this little gem?
Perhaps a lawn gnomes crystal ball?

Well that's all Folks.
Thanks for looking, and any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
MM

AH, life is good! At least for some of us. ;) ;D ;D We are suppose to get almost a foot of snow tonight. :P

I know that that SLQ is worth more than that 1/2 reale I found. The SLQ is such a cool coin to find. I love finding them. And to find one with a strong date..... ;D ;D ;D What did your wife think?

Enjoy!

Bob

MM,

That's an awesome site and a great SLQ! You didn't nick it that bad! - Jim

Modern Miner,

That is a great find!!!!!!!! Like almost everyone else, my first one had no date. Finding a SLQ in excellent condition is on the top of my wish list. I think they are coolest of all the US coins post 1900. Thanks for showing us.
Jon Dickinson.

A beautiful coin no doubt (in my book also) loads of detail couldent see the nick.

I DUG MY FIRST A FEW WEEKS AGO. MINE HAD NO DATE. I WAS EXCITED TO SAY THE LEAST. NICE FINDS AND HH.

Thanks everyone. I think this coin must have survived the abuse of the plow over the years being by that big tree and roots. It sat peacefully for 90 years until I came along and nicked it. :'( :'( :'( Oh well, it's still a great coin w/date. ;D

Bob,
Remember what I told you that my wife always asks me when I go MDing??? She says "did you find GOLD?" ;D
This is the wrong color and metal for her. ;D ;)

I have no idea what your 1/2 reale is worth value wise, but it has to be worth a fortune as far as the memory. ;)

I don't know how I missed your post but I was glad to see you getting that SLQ and the relics. You'll find more 'cause you got plenty of chances to keep going back..sounds like a dream site to me..best of luck on the next go-around!

Thanks Nat.
The partial 2nd gridding of the front yard yielded me six coins so far. Hopefully there will be a few more beauties. I would love to find a decent "V" nickel like Mirage found, or an LC.
Take care,
Doug

MM!! That SLQ is a beauty!!!! :o I wanna find one with a date on it!! :o Awesome, awesome find!!

CONGRATS!!!!! Nana :)

That's a GREAT find. I'm still looking for my 1st SLQ......maybe this weekend.
Anyway, that site seems like a great site with what youare STILL pulling up, not only from a coin perspective, but from a relics perspective also. You should hit that site unti you get no signals at all because it seems like a great site. Is there a lot of trash that you have to go through?

Congrats on the coin :)

Thanks AZ.
The only trash I am running into is pulltabs in the back & side yards, ad rusty iron (plow pieces, horseshoes, square nails, etc.).
I finished one of the three horse pastures. They are really clean too. Mirage found his 1/2 reale, and I found CW bullets, and a 1893 IH in the first pasture. The second pasture is about the same size as the first, but the back pasture is huge. There are a LOT of signals in that back pasture as you get closer to the house. Some large oak stumps on that area too. That pasture should turn up some finds for me once I get to that point. It will take a lot of gridding off.
Have a great weekend,
MM
