Yes Folks, miracles do happen. I FINALLY dug my first SLQ in the front yard of the plantation house. Of course I had to work for it too. I was gridding off the front yard again for my 2nd time. Some of you may remember a few weeks ago,I was using a new Tesoro with a stock 8" coil the first time thru while my other one was in the shop for a tuneup. I picked up a lot of coins including silver the first go around. This time I had my old machine back with the 9x8 web coil. I got a nice smooth low tone right next to what else? A flipping large tree root!!! I dug, and dug until I swear I was about a foot deep. The signal was coming from the side between numerous roots. I finally got a vibration on my Vibra Probe, and could see a silver rim once I wiped away a bit of dirt. I about soiled myself when out popped an SLQ!!!! :o Yeah, Baby!!! ;D A beautiful (in my book) 1917 (type 2) SLQ.
Now for the bad news....I nicked it with my trowel working around all those darn roots. :'(
I am about a third thru my 2nd pass now, and also pulled up five wheats that I missed, plus some relics.
I hope there will be another silver or two before I finish this second gridding.
Here are my finds:

*1917 SLQ (type 2) - Can someone give me an idea of what one in this condition would grade out at and be worth WITHOUT the nick in it?

*Wheats: 1917 , 18D , 20 , 38 , 56D

*A buckle (era?) with "Nickel Silver" and "ModerN' on the back

*A lead seal that I believe is a railroad relic. What I can make out is "R.R. - Neuse" on the front, and "NY" on the back. There are other letters on both the front and back, but I can't make them out.
The Neuse is a river close to where I MD at, and the old depot is only a few miles away. Here's a tidbit of info on the depot:
http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM1BRP

*The butt end of what looks like a lead race car?

*A small knife keychain

*Two long brass objects that I first thought were drawer handles. I checked the patent number on them and they are actually LINE SPLICERS, with a Jan. 1939 patent date.

*A oval "O" looking decoration piece.
Any ideas on this one?

*A strange round brass piece with what looks like a large clear lens or marble on top. It has "Pat's pending" and "Signal" on the bottom.
What is this little gem?
Perhaps a lawn gnomes crystal ball?

Well that's all Folks.
Thanks for looking, and any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
MM

...better bring the pick up truck. :D Maybe Charles will let us borrow the old "Sanford and Son". LOL :D

Just Remember...

Don't go into the Light...

Doug wears a dress and you do not want to see that... :o

Lil' Nicky

Then why did you ask me for a poster sized picture for your room? ??? It's o.k. to admit I was dead sexy Nick. ;D ;)
Go make some pizza.

Congrats on yet another successful endeavor...That site sure is kicking out some quality Relics and Coins. Cool Pics...HH

Dam... one year off from the big one.Nice find anyway.
Go Tesoro!!!! :o

The "M" on the obverse stands for "Hermon Atkins MacNeil", the designer of the coin. Mint marks would be located to the left of her right foot, right next to the bottom star in the verticle column of stars, (just above and to the left of the date). I see by the pic that yours was minted in Philadelphia (no mint mark). The only U.S. coin that depicted a bare breast was the 1916 SLQ. , so you were only 1 year off ! Oh well ! Better luck next time.....lol !

The fact that yours still shows the date is special for these circulated SLQ's. The date on SLQ's from 1916 - 1925 was raised, causing the dates to wear off quicker than most coins. After that, the date was recessed.

Many of us have found the worn SLQ's (we can only dream of which date/s we found). I hear there is a method for retreiving the dates on them that involves acids ???

Way to go on your first SLQ, MM!!!!! Yours is in a LOT better shape than mine was. You got some very nice relics too. Sure wish I was hunting there with you, woohoo!

Yo Doug,
Simply amazing looking SLQ!!!! Congrad's big time.

HOLY COW ~ that 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter is AWESOME!!! VERY NICE FIND!!! SWEET!

That, Sir, is one BEAUTY of a coin! My first was a dateless one LOL. Those danged roots are a pain.

Wow, that's a nice one, first time or not! I still haven't found one...not even a worn out dateless one. You sure are pulling the goods out of that spot!

Beautiful Standing Liberty Quarter. Very nice details. Besides the ding, there are scratches from rubbing and cleaning. I'll say it's worth $40 without the damage. On Ebay, there are buyers who don't care about damage. Nice haul of relics too -- keep up the fine work.

Good luck,
MM

Thank you everyone for the replies and info. I'm very excited to have found that SLQ. My silver finds are usually dimes, so this was a BIG surprise for me. This spot has been great to me so far. It's a great feeling to find an untouched old spot like this.
I'll be back at it tomorrow to finish gridding off the front yard, then on to the side yard.
Have a great weekend,
MM

Great post, nice pics ! Congrats on your latest "first". You did a good job trying not to rub it a lot, even though your digger got a little intimate with the lady.

The signal thingy is neat! I'm thinking of those old R.R- Xing signs with those little round "signal thingy's" in them. Just a guess!Good luck !...........HH

MEinWV,
That is a great guess. I remember those too. You may be right. Good one!

That's EXACTLY what it is!!! A reflector for a road sign! A LOT of road signs had these before the advent of relective paint and coatings. I've seen them used on old Stop signs, Yield Signs, Speed Limit Signs, AND RR Crossing signs. They were mainly on the really, really IMPORTANT signs that they wanted to make sure you could see them clearly at night.

Nice SLQ too! I am YET to find one with even a PARTIAL date let alone a full one!

WTG!
