Yes Folks, miracles do happen. I FINALLY dug my first SLQ in the front yard of the plantation house. Of course I had to work for it too. I was gridding off the front yard again for my 2nd time. Some of you may remember a few weeks ago,I was using a new Tesoro with a stock 8" coil the first time thru while my other one was in the shop for a tuneup. I picked up a lot of coins including silver the first go around. This time I had my old machine back with the 9x8 web coil. I got a nice smooth low tone right next to what else? A flipping large tree root!!! I dug, and dug until I swear I was about a foot deep. The signal was coming from the side between numerous roots. I finally got a vibration on my Vibra Probe, and could see a silver rim once I wiped away a bit of dirt. I about soiled myself when out popped an SLQ!!!! :o Yeah, Baby!!! ;D A beautiful (in my book) 1917 (type 2) SLQ.
Now for the bad news....I nicked it with my trowel working around all those darn roots. :'(
I am about a third thru my 2nd pass now, and also pulled up five wheats that I missed, plus some relics.
I hope there will be another silver or two before I finish this second gridding.
Here are my finds:

*1917 SLQ (type 2) - Can someone give me an idea of what one in this condition would grade out at and be worth WITHOUT the nick in it?

*Wheats: 1917 , 18D , 20 , 38 , 56D

*A buckle (era?) with "Nickel Silver" and "ModerN' on the back

*A lead seal that I believe is a railroad relic. What I can make out is "R.R. - Neuse" on the front, and "NY" on the back. There are other letters on both the front and back, but I can't make them out.
The Neuse is a river close to where I MD at, and the old depot is only a few miles away. Here's a tidbit of info on the depot:
http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM1BRP

*The butt end of what looks like a lead race car?

*A small knife keychain

*Two long brass objects that I first thought were drawer handles. I checked the patent number on them and they are actually LINE SPLICERS, with a Jan. 1939 patent date.

*A oval "O" looking decoration piece.
Any ideas on this one?

*A strange round brass piece with what looks like a large clear lens or marble on top. It has "Pat's pending" and "Signal" on the bottom.
What is this little gem?
Perhaps a lawn gnomes crystal ball?

Well that's all Folks.
Thanks for looking, and any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
MM

Great Detail on the SLQ. It's rare to see one even pop up with a date, let alone that much detail.
Congrats,
Jules

Congrats, MM! That quarter is a beauty! WTG! I like the other stuff you found, too. What a great day!

Thank Jules. That's what I heard. I think this one was well preserved under all those large tree roots. ;D

nice one.......MM.....

Big congrats to you, Doug, for finding your first SLQ. And it has a date too. ;D
I know you're not going to sell that coin, but I'd say it would be about a $50 coin without the ding in it.

I'm sure there's more hiding around that house. You have found such a great place to detect.
Very cool artifacts/relics too.

Congrats again, buddy!!

Probably worth $1.00 now. ;D ;)
I would never sell it though, you're right. This was a historic moment for me. I can cross this one off my list now.
Thanks Big Guy.

Great find, love that silver, can't wait until i find my first, how long you been detecting?

Thanks TG.
I've been MDing off and on for about 5 years now I think. I started out with a Garrett Ace 150 (or 100? - I forget).
I became serious about MDing within the last year and a half, once I started detecting old home sites and finding CW relics.
I'm hooked BAD now, and MD at least 4 or 5 times a week. A lot of times during my lunch. ;D

Great finds MM!!! What is the brass hook looking thing? I found one just like it a while back. As always good luck and great post.

Here is another I found last week. It was ID'd by WWWTIM on my other post as follows:
"I think your iron/brass piece is from a draft horse harness. the brass piece looks like where the reins came through."
