I want to tell my friends here in the What Is It forum that my Dad passed away at about 2:30 AM Friday Morning with me at his side. He has been unable to swallow food for 5 months and the doctors could not find the problem, until it was too late, even after subjecting him to numerous unnecessary testing. It reinforces my distrust for doctors.

My Dad was a Bronze Star recipient as a first scout with the 3rd Division at Anzio during the Italian Campaign push to Rome.. To post in this forum, my "what is it" is the small lapel pin with the eagle. No markings on the back.

Thank you.

Re: WWII pin SOLVED

I am still grieving from my fathers death. My brother is trying to piece together our family tree. Searching through my Dads belongings revealed some interesting papers. This being Veterans Day I thought it would be a good time to add this. It appears to be a Civil War discharge paper from my Great or GG Grandfather Lafayette Mason. I cant read it all but it looks like it says he served with the 178 Regiment Ohio Volunteers. Im still digging through this stuff. More pics to come.

Has anyone ever seen one of these? Anyone have more information on the 178 Reg.? Bramblefind can you find the name of his father?

My Dad told us we were a direct decendant of George Mason (GW's best friend and neighbor) but we would like to connect the family tree.

Re: WWII pin SOLVED Civil War Papers Found.

I was always told we were English and German on my fathers side but it appears there was some French. Lafayette seems to have been a common name. Maybe George Masons wife was French. :dontknow: http://www.gunstonhall.org/georgemason/ I havent even looked through these papers yet. Ill post a few before I give them to my brother. Thanks everyone.

If anyone is trying to piece together their family tree, I would suggest to ask elderly members to write down names and ask questions. When they pass on, its too late. Thanks everyone. TN is a great place.

What did you find? The link comes up blank. Ill try it. Thanks. :icon_thumright:

Lafayette's father was David Mason and his mother was Rebecca Taylor. Lafayette could have been named after the famous French General who fought in the American Revolution.

Re: WWII pin SOLVED Civil War Papers Found.

BigCy - I found something really interesting on Ancestry - they have these records-

U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938 Record for Lafayette Mason

but I have to take screen shots to get them to you. I will message you.

When I found him on the 1860 Census he was with David Mason (father) who is shown as born in Maryland.

Really? Thanks. Does it say what state they were born in? My brother says he is trying to make the connection from Ohio back to Virginia.
