Got out for an hour or so today before the rain started . Went to a spot that I have hit alot over the last couple of years . Its just down the road from my house and is my go to spot when I dont have long to hunt . Being as I have been there so many times the signals are really starting to thin out.
I started out by digging all of the iffy signals I came across . That only resulted in a lot of junk and modern bullets and shell casings . As time went on I moved further and further away from the primary location that I was hunting and started hitting some of the more out of the way and hard to get to spots. After about an hour I finally found my first good find . A flat button with alot of gilt on the back . About 10 minutes later I found a 1940 Canadian Penny . I was happy because I figured at least I had found one coin and wouldn't be totally skunked. As I worked my way around a little more in the area where I found the button and Canadian penny I hit a solid 12-40 signal on my Etrac. Usually that means a wheat penny to me so I was expecting to see one of those in the plug. To my surprise what turned up in the plug was not a wheat penny but something the size of a dime and worn very very thin. I started to clean some of the dirt off to see what I had and I noticed the dull gleam of silver. Then I saw a date and I got very excited.
I had found my very first Spanish Real . A Half Real from what I can tell by looking at pictures on the web. Had to look it up because I have never seen one before in person . It has definitely seen better days but it is my first Spanish silver and my oldest silver coin to date. I am very happy that even though there is a lot of detail on the coin that is gone it still has a very clear legible date of 1765.
To dig a Spanish silver is number 2 on my bucket list behind digging a gold coin. I'm not sure if this year can get any better from here . I am so excited to have this piece of silver in my hand

Not a damn thing wrong with that! Nice find!

that is really nice and older than most, i want to dig one so bad

Fantastic! What a sharp coin you've found, with super history. I had a very similar experience last weekend, with my first Spanish being a 1783 half real. A few others have had the same thing happen this last week. Tnet's El Niño Plata Pequena!

Tough to make out the mint mark (at least for me). Is that another M to the left of the date? Mexico City then, I think.

Grats!

Sweet!... Good job by you.

Congrats on digging that bucket lister. :occasion14: Awesome coin! :headbang: the E Trac is doing great for you. I dream of a Spanish silver and also getting into the 1700's club one day.

I tried to make out the mark to the left of the date with a Loupe but I cant tell what it is either

Congrats on a great find. If one detail is all you can get, the date would be my number one pick!

Very nice find!! My buddy jdsly dug his first Spanish silver this past weekend and was super excited. Heck I was super excited just being there when he dug it!! Big congrats and hope your gold coin gets dug this year too.

Congrats on a great find. If one detail is all you can get, the date would be my number one pick!

Totally agree on that . Wish some of my LCs had that detail . :laughing7:

Yea buddy! Worn or not that is one hell of a find!

Beauty Spanish. You'll never forget the hunt nor the feeling. A big congrats!!

Steve

I would love to put that one in my bucket to take off my list.

Congrats on the awesome Spanish silver! Nothing like your first really old silver coin!

I love seeing people knock stuff off the list. That's a big one for sure. I could take you to every single spot I have dug a colonial silver from. I can't remember this morning but I can't forget every second of digging those. What an amazing feeling it is

Now that's a great find
Grats

Ahab I definitely agree . I will remember that spot forever

Congrats on a cool find! I don't know anything about Spanish silver, but I don't think I've seen any dated 1765 posted before.

Gotta give a congrats on that!! I'd definitely just go home after finding a piece of Spanish silver... At least I think I would... Given I didn't have heart failure... Maybe one day...
