Got out for an hour or so today before the rain started . Went to a spot that I have hit alot over the last couple of years . Its just down the road from my house and is my go to spot when I dont have long to hunt . Being as I have been there so many times the signals are really starting to thin out.
I started out by digging all of the iffy signals I came across . That only resulted in a lot of junk and modern bullets and shell casings . As time went on I moved further and further away from the primary location that I was hunting and started hitting some of the more out of the way and hard to get to spots. After about an hour I finally found my first good find . A flat button with alot of gilt on the back . About 10 minutes later I found a 1940 Canadian Penny . I was happy because I figured at least I had found one coin and wouldn't be totally skunked. As I worked my way around a little more in the area where I found the button and Canadian penny I hit a solid 12-40 signal on my Etrac. Usually that means a wheat penny to me so I was expecting to see one of those in the plug. To my surprise what turned up in the plug was not a wheat penny but something the size of a dime and worn very very thin. I started to clean some of the dirt off to see what I had and I noticed the dull gleam of silver. Then I saw a date and I got very excited.
I had found my very first Spanish Real . A Half Real from what I can tell by looking at pictures on the web. Had to look it up because I have never seen one before in person . It has definitely seen better days but it is my first Spanish silver and my oldest silver coin to date. I am very happy that even though there is a lot of detail on the coin that is gone it still has a very clear legible date of 1765.
To dig a Spanish silver is number 2 on my bucket list behind digging a gold coin. I'm not sure if this year can get any better from here . I am so excited to have this piece of silver in my hand
