So we've been researching this site. We've been there before, but as I stepped out of the truck this morning things seemed to look different. I think different, because we've taken the time to read about the place. This is a large area and has seen folks around for many years, so we were hoping to find some older keepers.
First find in the keeper pocket was a buckle! Love to find these. I'll add it to my small collection for sure.

Next find was this neat brooch/pin....I am still cleaning on it.....
100_0306.JPG
I find a broken buckle, and then a first for me. My first shield nickel!! :hello2:

I found this next...anyone know what it is?
100_0296.JPG
100_0297.JPG
Found a neat lock...
100_0301.JPG
And Lisa found one that is soooo cool! It's in the shape of a heart. She also found her first V nickel. :icon_thumright: She hasn't sent me any pics yet. :-\
Found a 1912D wheat. Is the prettiest color of green and is cleaning up fairly well.
100_0293.JPG
Don't know what this is, but thought it was something to take a second look at...
100_0311.JPG
When did they make harmonica reeds out of lead? :icon_scratch: It's lead with the little brass/copper looking little something-or-others....
Found a toe tap, assorted lead (one's a lead seal) and other bits and pieces.
Last find of the day was a button. I had no idea what it was. I thought thru the crusty dirt I could see some initials, but didn't know what I had. When I got home, I was so nervous about cleaning it. Here's a pic with just brushing it lightly with a toothbrush....
100_0295.JPG
I started getting all fidgety and trying to read what it said. :D ACC? Does it say ACC? What's ACC? :icon_scratch: OH MY GOODNESS! I knew I needed to take my time and not totally ruin something that might be good. Remembered reading on one of BB's threads not to soak it in water if it's a two piece, so I got the toothpick out and got to cleaning. After what seemed like hours of picking at it, I got a few Q-tips and dampened them. Rubbed a bit more of the dirt off and here's what it looks like....
100_0316.JPG
I can read the word 'Waterbury' on the back..and there's something else there, but I can't make it out.
100_0319.JPG
Happy dance occurred in the den, at my desk, looking thru a magnifying glass with a toothpick in one hand and the button in the other.

Have a great week!!

Wow! Thanks a bunch, ya'll!! :icon_sunny: We had a lot of fun yesterday. It's rained all day today and prospects for hunting tomorrow looks mighty slim. More rain. :-X
Thanks so much for the ID's! You all are the best! I did try to read up on the button before I posted it, but without being able to read the back, I wasn't sure if it was going to be an extra special find. I've been cleaning on the back of this button off and on all day today. I am officially down to my last toothpick. :P :D PALeeeeese tell me you can see the writing! :D

I'll have to find some of the aluminum jelly, BB. I assume it can be purchased somewhere like Lowe's? Home Depot? I can see some of the gold under there. If I try the peroxide first, will it hurt for the entire button to be submerged? Thanks, BB and Iron for the cleaning tips. :)
WWW...YES! There's lots of trash here. But mostly iron. (horseshoes, broken cooking vessels, LOTS of nails!)
Burt, you're too kind! I think I'll keep this one. ;D And thanks ya'll for mentioning the banner, but I'm sure there are many others here more deserving. :icon_pirat:

Good to see GreenOne and Vic posting!!! Thanks for the kind replies!
PS..Vicki...I still find nails. :P :D

PSS... You'd look stunning, I'm sure, MM! :-*

Oh..and Rob...hope your snow is gone soon! I don't know if my luck will last much longer. :D

Thanks again ya'll!

All you need to do is drop it in a cup peroxide , let it bubble for 10 or 20 minutes, and maybe brush it a little bit to help it along. The idea is to get the harder crud off, and once you do so you take it out of the hp and just set aside to let dry. Don't rinse it under the water, the idea is to keep the green color, and as it dries you will see it start to come back, but will look more like a dusting of green and the gilt showing through. (this is the point that lets you decide if you want to jelly to wipe out all the green) As for being safe, any button that would be hurt in any way from a peroxide soak would be out right destroyed by the jelly. So in other words there's nothing to be worried about. This is actually the safe way to clean a button to decide if you want to take the final step of using the jelly. When you go straight to the jelly you're instantly rolling the dice there's going to be enough gilt left to look nice. Also, because you want to use limited exposure there's a very good chance you will not get all the green off, and extended application may eat at the surface. Remember when you use the jelly essentially what you're doing is stripping the face of the button. I often have to do that with my real cruddy ones here, but when I have the chance to leave it green and gold I seriously think about doing it.

Great finds Love the button!

Congrats on a great field of finds. Especially that button and your first shield nickel. I just got my first shield this year too, except its a '74. You got me beat.

You've done it again. :hello2: :hello2: Making all of us "snow bunnies" suffer again. Spring can't come soon enough.

Congrats on some excellent finds.

OH..but Neb...as soon as your spring hits, my relic hunting season is all but over here. :-\ Could I have just a few more weeks of winter? (without the rain!) :D

Thanks for all the kind remarks ya'll! AND thanks for the encouragement and details on cleaning the button. I don't find many that I am thrilled with, but when I do, I am SO nervous over the cleaning process. :-X

Went to the local Mom and Pop store and purchased a box of toothpicks and a bottle of peroxide. Got the button (top side only) cleaning. Thought while I was sitting here I'd clean the fan too. Heck, I may end up with bowls of peroxide all over my desk, cleaning everything before the day is over. :D

You know this wouldn't be half as fun if I didn't have someone to share my experiences with. Charlie just goes, "Can I retire yet?" BLAHHHH :D NO... Not yet, dear. :D
Thanks again!!! Have a great weekend!

Nana :hello:

Post it when you're done! Remember, all you can control is the process getting to what's below and the idea is to be as easy on the button as possible. After that, it all comes down to luck or reality depending on how you want to look at it.

The place you are safe is the detail.

Green1, thank you for posting. I know know what the thing I found is a buckle. Here is an image of the one I found. Thank you very much. Do you know anything about the buckle? :dontknow:

I think it's a large 1800s suspender buckle.

I'll have to say Nana, you had an excellent hunt. Nice job on the research!!! Love the buckle and the shield nickle. And I know you'll find some more. Looks like an excellent site you found. And I almost forgot. Congrats on the button find, too Ron

Thanks, ya'll!
Only thing I know about the buckle is that it's a buckle. :P

With encouragement from IP and BB I am making progress on cleaning the button. :D I'm not good at this, but here's what I got so far...should I keep going or let it be?

First one is last night while it was wet , second one I took this morning....

Tough call. If the first picture is probably a pretty good idea what it would look like waxed. But when there's a lot of imperfection it makes it look more glossy in a bad way. The dry pic doesn't seem to show very much of the gilt, but is still nice dug condition.

If you use the jelly and wipe all the green away, I'm not sure there will be enough gilt to be better than your wet pic. Anyway, this is the part that you have to decide. :)

To be honest I think I would go with the 2nd pic and leave it. The green is nice dug condition. The gilt not showing well wouldn't be a big issue for me.

Yep, I would 100% leave it as is in picture two. It's also better collector condition than what's left for choices. (just my opinion of course)

PS... If not sure if you leave it like picture 2 it can always be cleaned later. That might be the best option just to see if it grows on you, or you keep thinking I want to see that gilt! ;D

The whole world went by before I read this thread. Wow Nana great finds. Congratulations.

Burdie

Dang Nana! I almost missed this post. Really great stuff! Looks like you found a neat site. Show us more! And a bullet in a pear tree! M :icon_thumleft: nty

:D My sweet Burdie's been busy preparing for the rowdy bunch! :-* Thank you!! :)

Thanks, Monty! You know I put those little lead shots up there just for you! ;D  Funny you say a bullet in a pear tree....Lisa found a shot there that was still in wood! :D

OK...I have one vote to leave it alone. (Thanks IP) Any one else have any thoughts on this one? I have been cleaning a bit on that little fan brooch as well....and I am surprised at the guilt left on that one too.

Nana :)

Your button looks great as-is. The cleaning went well. Bravo to you on such a great find. On the backmark, is it "Mf'g" or "Mfg"?

-Buckles

What a bunch of great finds....quiet unusual.
