Hello all, I have an odd coin I found awhile back that I had soaking in oil for awhile now. That's why its today's find.. because a few months ago it looked like nothing. and today it looks like a William III coin looking at the pony tail. ( I know technically its not found today but give me a break I have not gone detecting in months due to a back issue :notworthy:) Now the area I found this in is in New England and I have found relics such as a couple of very old shoe buckles among other coins but this would be the oldest coin found there so far.

Now my problem is the size and weight,, This coin 27mm in diameter 1.5 mm thick and weighs just under 6 grams.
So what do you all think. Do I have a William the III or is this just some counterfeit or am I seeing things that are not there. I hope its real because this would make my oldest coin found so far.. I have a few coins in the 1730- 1740 range so I am hoping to beat them.

The back side show nothing at all, I will stick it back in the oil bath to see what else comes up after a few months.

No, it is not a counterfeit. I do the bust and think it is a William, don't think it's the double bust of William and Mary, though.

I wish the back had some detail..but not yet. I had a King George that took over a year before I could ID it.:zoom:

It probably would have dropped quickly in Today's Finds too. Nice find! :icon_thumright: Looks like a William III and yes it could be a contemporary era counterfeit. There are counterfeits of William III halfpennies they just haven't been studied as much as the George IIs and George IIIs.

man you guys and the olive oil. so bad for the coins, use distilled water instead, changing water every few days.

Not olive oil. Mineral oil, And when it comes down to coins in this bad of shape it either that or leave then looking like a blank disc. After I will remove the oil and seal it with a wax.
I will give Distilled water a try on the next bad coin. Thanks
