Will the next series of detectors ruin our hobby???

Hi xr7ator; The Penny my friend dug at 2' was a nice Large Cent in XF. Odds are you will NEVER dig a modern penny at over 6 - 8".
The types of coins buried at those depths (10 - 12") or more ARE most likely Colonial in nature. A general rule is the deeper the better. Me I'll dig that deep for a nice Colonial coin any time. After all isn't that what we are all searching for to begin with. I'm not looking for Wheaties at 6" for sure. I'll take them but I'll take a Large Cent or King George Copper any day ok. I hope this allieves your angst. PEACE:RONB

Huh? I have pulled a many large cent less than 4 inches and that 1837 hard times token was sitting at 3.

Hi Muckybottles; True. Depends on the site. I've done the same. Thing is that I've searched fields where the stiuff hasv plowed under aswell. Those are the ones that require the extra depth and or digging ok. PEACE:RONB

Barker, I too have been detecting for many years, since 1972 in my case. Yep, I lived the BFO, TR years, I started with a Jetco way back then. I've had 2 Jetcos, a Whites 5000D, a Tesoro Cutlass II, a Tesoro Toltec 100, and now a Minelab 705 not to mention a few toy like detectors that I acquired over the years from others.

The legal issues are a definite concern, the Game Commission is doing the same in PA. Fortunately there are MD advocate groups looking out for our best interest as best they can.

Regarding the equipment.... MDing has become more popular and the competition is getting tougher. Many sites that we hunted back in the day are still producing these many years later. Had we all still be using old TR and BFO machines, we wouldn't be finding anything, you and I would have found it all years ago.

I don't think that the advancement of the equipment is a bad thing, and as someone previously said, it has more to do with the user than anything. Many of my good finds were found on places that were deemed "hunted out". Also, the best detector in the world won't find anything if you haven't mastered the research part of the sport unless you're just plain lucky.

My biggest beef are these buffoons on the recent MD shows. These guys are glorifying the sport in some cases, making things look easy to strike it rich in other cases, but mostly making us look like fools. I personally know people who now want to detect because they think that finding old coins and the dream of finding gold is easy and they want to be part of it. Those of us who have been doing this for years, 42 years in my case, have paid our dues and honed our skills. We can only hope that they don't create issues for us and then give up quickly when they realize that these finds don't just jump out of the ground.

I feel like others here that detecting faces a greater threat from laws and regulation than from new tech. As you can see on this thread, some have eluded to covert and black detecting. Those who will hunt without owner permission, dig holes and not fill them in, not dig proper plugs. It is people like these that will ruin this hobby and give detectorists a bad name. As far as tech goes, how much info do you need from a detector? I have seen detectors now that have so many ways to analyze a target, you could spend 15 minutes just looking at the data. Why, when you can just dig the target and move on? Most of the time I can tell my target by sound and just look at target ID for confirmation. The only new tech I like is ground balance, and pinpointing so I can zero in on the target easier and dig smaller plugs. I feel that anything else is overkill and over complicates what we do. I do welcome deeper, more reliable machines.

Well im pretty new to md, and it doesn't matter if you have been md for 50 yrs.its great and im happy for you.but just like deer hunting people have been doing it for a long time.doesn't mean new people are not trying it all the time.as far as the md shows they dont show you all the bottle caps they are digging up.just the goog stuff, I think everybody knows that.as far as our rights I dont see why snybody would want to ban it we are cleaning the beaches, and playgrounds ect.of junk.but I dont mean any disrespect at all.I look up to the guys that have been doing this for
Years and keep it up.

Hi Folks; Hotrod53 hit it on the head ok. Thanks guy. Yup. The new guys today will be the old pros of tomorrow and I bet they'll all look back and say "boy we had fun." and think about todays technology with melancholy. What do you guys think?? PEACE:RONB

PS: If we don't fight for OUR Rights today. These Political types will eventually end detecting as we know it with a myriad of Regulations and Laws. PLEASE do not EVER give up the fight against their form of Tyranny ok. Thanks.
