Doing some research for this summer. Wife and I plan to get a boat, so finding some places along the Mississippi river to hunt and sand bars to hang out on, have now become a smidgen of a hobby.
The land is DNR land, but it isn't any sort of park or wildlife area and is open to hunting. So we'll see.

But I was looking at a map from 1896 and found a wagon road with a ferry crossing.
I then looked at an aerial map of the area and you can see how dense it is. It will take me a while to overlay maps and get some cordinates. Then I have to go out and hunt around for awhile to confirm the road still exists and it wasn't washed out by flooding or anything.
Then enters LIDAR! I have access to some LIDAR maps through the University of Minnesota (I'm an alumni), so this is pretty sweet. You can clearly see the old wagon road that zigs then zags and approximate location of the ferry crossing! Pretty sweet.

Very interesting, that trail cuts through the low lands east of downtown hastings.
