why are there more male mders?

Very good points... I guess it has alot to do where you come from.. Me,I come from a small town with one red light, and I'm still here.
Many women would find it difficult to swing a detector for any length of time.
The pioneer 202 I use to tote is nothing to swing compared to the MXT.. I would actually feel like I had worked out after swinging it.. I'm use to it now.. must have developed a muscle or two..

I think you have to have that certain tomboy quality for this type of thing ! I know i most certainly do .I also bottle hunt, fish, camp ,play baseball, hike etc.....its fun ! God made dirt & dirt dont hurt ! ;) Heck when i was a kid i use to climb trees ! ;D

I cook, I clean, I take care of my daughter and old man both are lazy and preferr the AC...I however like to be out and about (not paying bills and shopping type of out..)I like getting dirty ;D..So I hunt, fish, camp what ever it takes to get out of the house...and then a friend lent me her detector and well that was the end. I'm hooked!

And not all chicks are ALL "girlie" ALL the time ;)

It is just women do not dream of finding treasure under the dirt or in a dump LOL. Most find their treasures at the Mall . LOL > but once exposed to the hobby, they usually become overjoyed with the "thrill of the hunt " ;D

I think Carolina is on the right track. I would guess most women have never been exposed to MDing. A (male) neighbor loaned us his MD last fall and got me hooked. I love the thrill of the hunt and being outside. I grew up with brothers, too, and have always loved anything outdoors. I've gotten a college girlfriend hooked, too. :) Interestingly, my 12 YO daughter shows more interest than my 13 YO son. I guess it's an individual thing. Fear of being out alone in remote areas may keep some women away. I would speculate that many women have family responsibilities that may keep them from hard core MDIng. I know this happens to me.

Artemis, where are you in IL? Feel free to PM me.

Because males are always messing up,which leads to sleeping on the couch and getting locked out. ;D ;D ;D

I metal detect, bottle collect(hunt),fish,go camping,4 wheel..ect.Get muddy and yucky... I also can get dressed up and go out an be a "girl".. I think that ability to do both,is one of the things the hubby admires most about me. Not afraid to get dirty and then can turn around get my nails done and put makeup on ... blah blah..

You Go Girl....be nice to meet a girl with those qualities here in NY

Just making the time to MD might be one of the reasons. I know I don't get to as often as I'd like just because of work, kids, housework and all of the other chores that come up.

I actually think it is a matter of "appearance". "Most" women I know, have to put on their face, before going out in public. Even if only a little blush and lipstick. My wife is not one of those (thank God) and I love her for it. While any MD'r, male or female, gets some strange looks for being weird, I find that women really have a hard time dealing with "strange". When I'm out in full regalia (knee pads, earphones, belt, and boots) especially in my baggy shorts with the big pockets (for really good finds), my wife tries to pretend she doesn't know me, much less dressing up like a contestant from Let's Make a Deal as I do. ;D Being a laid back kinda guy, I could care less how I look, as opposed to being functional and comfortable. I don't think it is really a male/female thing, as it is a matter of looking "proper". And most women (at least the ones I know) were taught to be proper. JR

My wife is a nurse, she sees a lot of the things that happen to us guys when we do the things we do. She says that we guys sure do some weird things just to look into a hole.

I think she goes with me just to stand at the top pr bottom of a cliff face and tell me just how stupid she thinks I am being. LOL

I don't use a detector often, but Spanish signs and trails are an obsession and she accompanies me on walks though some of the roughest of terrains. But when it comes to the actual hunting she basically says "Spanish?.... Yeah right." Even when we find things.
she just has a nonbelieving attitude about the whole thing. I am sure she would much rather sit in the truck and read one of those girlie type "smutt" er... romance novels. LOL

I am glad she does come with me though.
It is always more fun when we do things together.

lets look at our hobby...
you got to buy this expensive gadget and run around in the heat with it, occaissionaly getting dirty, you look like a big nerd carrying it around and its bulky. there's lots of girl repellant in this hobby.

you think women are scarce here?!? try ham radio! now there's a hobby with like 5% women in it! trust me, i'm a ham radio operator as well as an MD'er. just nerding it up aint i!

i think its just that women dont take to gadgetry like men do. us men love gadgets.

Amazing that this thread keeps going. My mom was a child of the late '60s. She was totally into the whole women's lib, equal rights, burn your bra type feminism. I got raised with a big dose of that mindset! One of the things some of those feminists insisted on, was that there was no inherent (in-born) difference between men and women. Any perceived differences in abilities, likes, dislikes, etc... was all the evil society's constraints put on them, since birth. Ie.: girls play with dolls NOT because they inherently are drawn to them, but because they are subtly coached by their parents, since toddler age. etc... blah blah.

In other words, there is no difference between men and women, besides indoor and outdoor plumbing. Therefore, there is no reason why women shouldn't be driving tractors, being firemen, fighting in the front trenches, piloting fighter jets, etc.... Any off-ratios between the various jobs men and women hold, are obvious discrimination, and deserve lawsuits to get the #s equal, since afterall, they are both equally qualified, aptitudes are identical (or should be) etc....

But if you look through this thread, every last one of them hints that there IS inherent differences. Hmm, fancy that. Are we all chauvenists? Are we all victims of the brainwashing we've received since we were toddlers? Or is there inherent differences in male/female besides plumbing?

Got a question for you, Tom_in_CA. Has your wife ever gone out detecting with you or shown any interest in trying a detector?

My wife will sometimes pack a picnic lunch and come along if she thinks I might be going to an interesting place like by a river or lake, but she said she isn't going to waste her time digging up pennies.

Al, nope, she wouldn't touch a detector with a 10 ft. pole. But the feminists would tell you that's because of subconscious suggestive child-rearing techniques she received as a little girl. And the reason boys play with trucks and toy guns is subconscious promptings by their fathers to be aggressive, competitive, hunters, etc... Mind you none of this is inherent differences, but only the way we steer our children into molds. Agree or disagree?

Well, Tom, I was brought up before the "feminists" started putting forth their "subconcious suggestive child rearing theories". I always considered it so much psycho-bable. My wife kind of feels the same way about the feminists of the 1960's and 70's.

I think once anyone seriously gives a try at metal detecting and makes a good coin find or finds a nice piece of jewelry they're pretty much in the club from then on out. Perhaps the males are less concerned about feeling stupid or looking like an oddball when detecting since the odds are that they will find something eventually and therefore the thrill of the hunt and the find is something pretty much in the genes anyway. I know quite a few non detectors whose main complaint boils down to their being selfconscience.

I had thought that I would have been drawn and quartered by now, sniff I suppose that this means that you know me too well and didn't take my post seriously.

Your picture shows it all, you boys just can't handle the load. It takes a woman to get the job done.
