Who here goes armed whenever they are out in the field prospecting or detecting?

We are in a political climate that creates fear. That is why newbies are running out buying guns. Fear from the left and fear from the right.

Rich,I guess we are differennt in that beleif then.As you know I have spent my entire life in the woods and with a gun.I have been trained and have trained to use a gun as a tool, and for defense. The only animal I fear in the woods is the Grizz, and a Mother Moose, other than that,I just have a healthy respect for all creatures. The big difference between four legged, and two legged is that animals seldom have ill intent toward man,and are equipped with the same defenses....unlike our fellow man,who we never really know ones intent or what "tools",they may posses.I have been in some VERY high stress situations, that are too lengthy to get into right now,but in about half,I would have likely been exonerated had I chose to use the deadly force I was capable of....I chose not to,as I was not positive it was needed....yet.I am thankful every day,I didnt take some ones life but I was prepared to,if the need had risen to any higher a level(One such case I actually received Recognition from State Parks L.E,and the Federal Fish & Wildlife Services L.E,for excersizing great restraint when faced with an extremely dangerous fugitive...thats here nor there.....I am far from the type of guy that is a chest beater or goes flaunting the fact that I am carrying.I have always lived by the rule that if you draw your weapon you better darn well be prepared to use it,and by God,when needed I draw comfort in knowing I will be prepared

"That is why newbies are running out buying guns."

Just a note...

I'm a member on several firearm boards. And I'm seeing a lot of talk about members going to the range and seeing a large amount of newbies who are very unsafe with their new guns!
I'm lucky enough to shoot at home... don't think I would want to be around unsafe newbies!?

....that does concern me,kind of goes hand in hand with my disdain of these detecting, and gold shows,ya got ye hoo's running all over that dont have a clue of ethics and respect....
Richard....I was not disagreeing with that statement...I quoted the wrong one! Yes,the media is the worse enemy we have as gun owners IMHO

The range can be a good place to learn. Has to happen some where. Preferably with range officers present. Fortunately the only problem where i shoot is unsupervised range use where some one needs to be told "don,t shoot the posts!!." Why is that?.

Good thread. I particularly P47RCFlyer's posts. Good info. Newbies goin out and buyin guns, here's some advice-practice, train, train, train. In stressful situation of any kind, you will automatically revert to your training. Train hard enough, long enough, the right way, it'll see you through. Probably never have to use it, but if you do you can thank me later.

Can I add a bit to that? Never ever ever place your hand in front of the barrel. Of all the people I know who have been involved in an accident with a firearm shot themselves. Either in the hand, the leg, the hip, and so on. Mostly the hand. i have been conceal carrying my weapon for 3 years with one in the chamber. It is training and controlled handling that keeps you safe. Never touch the trigger unless you are pointing the weapon where you want a round to travel, and never ever pass your hand in front of the barrel while training. Oh ya and in the event of that inevitable misfire and you hear that "click"... PLEASE don't look down the barrel to see why it didn't go off.

Oh and if you voted for OBUMMER you have already proven that you are not responsible enough to own a gun. If you did and you own a gun please go suck start it.

i carry but only in the woods not in a public place just in case a bear with cubs or horny buck wants to butt heads when i was in the Utah desert i did for the mountain lion issues and to protect my dog if it came to that. im glad i never had to pull it from its holster in emergency but gives piece of mind when your 100 miles in a desert i carry a rambo knife with me in public places and believe it made some think twice LOL

Yes. I have a permit and I carry concealed; Springfield .45 depending upon where I am going. I used to open carry but it scares people. Often I am alone in the mountains. I've encountered bears, coyotes chowing on a dead deer that weren't happy to see me, snakes of all sorts, Bull Elk in rut etc. I've never had to shoot any of them. I would certainly rather carry than to have one incident where I go where I would really need it. Keep in mind that your firearm may just be the perfect signal if you were to get hurt 5 miles into the mountains from a road. Anticipate the need....whatever can go wrong just might.
