Who here goes armed whenever they are out in the field prospecting or detecting?

Yes sir i take my arms with me every were i go... i have 2 of them one right and one left ,.. Never leave home with out them.....

I prefer 17 shots over 6..... just my $0.02

Like I said in post #132...

"The thing to remember is in a self defense encounter the average number of shoots fired is 3.
My opinion is, don't let the idea that you're carrying a pistol with a large number of rounds give you a false sense of security.
Unless you plan to be in a gun fight.. which I don't!"

Well as a LEO and a combat vet, Ive certainly learned its better to have and not need than to need and not have. Cops carry auto for a reason as do solders with 30 round mags. Im like you tho, im not looking for a gun fight but if one is put upon me, ill be over prepared.

I know what you're saying. By not knowing what to expect, we must make decisions based on our best judgement or prior experience.

Well stated and ALL my past experience is with high capacity autos so im par for your rational

I detect mostly in the city so I don't carry a pistol. I would not carry a pistol. But If i were prospecting out in Gods country it seems like the logical thing to do. I am a fan of firearms but I don't feel like I need to be armed everywhere I go. I do a lot of detecting at night because I think its peaceful and I dont sleep well. Ive noticed people who happen along where Im at late at night usually hurry their pace away from me. The ones who don't are usually drunk and just want to drunk talk me to death. But if I were in unfamiliar territory or gold prospecting no matter whether it was night or mid day I would carry.

Good post. Please keep the language in check though as T-net is for all ages. I appreciate ya'll respecting this. Enjoyed reading the thread.

I see for the most part people are carrying but there are a few that seem to think it ridiculous.......I have to ask....and I know nothing numismatic is worth dieing for but,I spend a lot of time in very rural areas and usually looking for gold.Now........one would be amazed at where people just appear...even though they are not supposed to be there...they are,and they generally approach you.I have to say, never have these sorts been the type I would likely have over for Christmas dinner and usually seem to be in pairs.Now....with gold prices the way they are,and folks aware of this and many very desperate ....usually for their next Meth high, what would you do when you were confronted, and happened to have a pocket of nuggets and a $1000+ detector?I know my answer....I am not a sheep though

I am in the back woods all the time dealing with trespassers and poachers and have come upon pot grows and meth labs. I have never had to use violence. Had a guy call me off of one of my no trespassing signs and threaten to bury me in the road. I said great make it easy I will see you at the gate at 9am sat morn. I was there at 6 and set out my bro a Marine spotter just in case. :laughing7: He was a no show.Guess my point is in the mtns people do not scare me as much as a rutting crazy buck or walking into a Black bear sow. Drawing a bow and feel something on your foot and see you are standing on a copperhead chewing at your boot. That scare me. That is the time for the old fashioned happy dance ! I trust myself and am always aware of my surroundings unless stalking an animal in my sites then its tunnel vision.
I am very good at diffusing a situation by most times walking right in to it. Am sure the gold situation puts you on high alert though.

Now I may not do so well metal detecting with the distractions of the city. But am learning , I did have a crack dealer watch my truck for me as I hunted a lot. I kept yelling at him asking if everything was ok. He was freaking out jumping around and guarding my truck parked on his corner saying yeah man its cool, its cool, lol. I kept my head phones off. It was hilarious. Another time I came off a ridge into a bad neighborhood on a dead end street. They were dealing drugs and drinking and had no idea what I was emerging out of the thicket. I held up some 3 ringers and they were like no way those are those bullets? I said yep and they were pulling out little 9s for comparison. They were Crips. By then I had a good crowd around and drank a colt 40 with the boys telling them about the civil war. They were digging it and I was sorta embellishing it some I admit.Maybe re wrote a little history. That beer is what kicked my arse. I left them with a bullet and got permission to park in their yard for the next hunt. Well I figured they would sober up and not remember me so planned a new exit to my area for the next hunt.

Guess my point is be aware and ready.I am in the south and every yahoo is now carrying a gun. Oh boy. I get a kick out my neighbors walking their dogs. They all strap on their pistol and off they go around the block.Open carry is ok here. Neighbor watch. Oh the stories I could tell. Always make violence your last resort but always be aware and learn the rule of distance.Carrying should not equate to chest beating or make you braver than you already are.But no one should live in fear ever. Its just another tool in my modest humble opinion. Thats all I am going to say about that! Off to work its tax time.
Be safe and happy hunting

How would you like to live in my state (MA.) where technically it's perfectly legal to open carry.....just don't get caught doing it. Nice huh. Not that I would anyways just making a point on how ridiculous gun control laws can really be.

I agree...:icon_thumright:

That is my kind of truck

I just got a ruger new model blackhawk .357 which I will carry in the woods from now on I used to carry a 12g cut down single shot shotgun or my .22 pistol

Very interesting discussion. I have detected East Tennessee over 30 years now and can't remember ever carrying a pistol with me. I usually stay all day when I go and have plenty enough to carry. Kill snakes with my spade. I served my Country in Vietnam. I Have a house full of guns. I will never let anyone take them. Just never felt the need to carry one while detecting.

Tell me again.. how many shots do I need...:icon_scratch:

Point of video well taken and thanks for posting. Not trying to debate or create a fuss. However, it is important that everyone understand, this is a very controlled environment. You won't know exactly how many shots are needed until the threat has been stopped. I have seen people shot multiple times with various calibers (yes, some large) at various distances and survived. There are several factors to consider when asking this question of "how many shots do i need". You have to factor in weather conditions (visibility mostly), what is the threat, distance of the threat, closure rate of the threat, can you hit the center of mass of the threat, are you calm enough to stay focused & aim, what other variables are involved such as other people nearby and so on. These questions go on and on and you have to be able to run through all this and make a split second judgement call. This is critical because what was a nice sunny day of metal detecting could quickly land you a prison sentence if you make the wrong decision like so many i have seen in the past. My best advise is to retreat at cost if possible. I have seen this scenario play out quite a few times that lead to the demise of a citizen simply trying to defend his person or property. Just because you may carry a .50 cal Desert Eagle does NOT mean you can be effective with it and make the right decision before using it. Again, this is not about the gun, it is about the person behind the gun that makes the difference. I can kill someone just as fast with a .22 as with a .45. It is about judgement skills, training and proper bullet placement with under abnormal stress conditions. Again, just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

P47RCFlyer...

The video was aimed at the "auto guys" and their large number of rounds...
just a joke and show a little sarcasm.

We are in a political climate that creates fear. That is why newbies are running out buying guns. Fear from the left and fear from the right.
