Not much is known about my early life. In fact, my date and place of birth is still questioned. The usual given birth date is April 23, 1904. My birthplace has been generally stated as Spain--my first memories as a child were in Spain--although Romania and even New Jersey have been mentioned as well. An orphan, I never knew my actual parents and was never able to ascertain the exact date and place of my birth. I was raised and educated in various European countries and arrived in the US in the early 1920s as a stoker on a Brazilian coal ship. Entering the country on a 90-day seaman's permit, I stayed continued to stay in the U.S. illegally when my ship caught fire at the dock and burned to the waterline. I earned a paltry existence as a portrait painter and many of my portraits have been thought to have been prized possessions. In 1934, I was arrested for being an illegal immigrant and faced deportation. I spent a year in prison.

I was eventually pardoned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt--his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt had bought one of my paintings, looked into my case and persuaded her husband to pardon me.

What's sad is I just turned 34.... guess that's what happens when your family watches old westerns when you're growing up...

As soon as I get paid again, I'm becoming a charter member, I LOVE this - and I also realize what it takes to maintain a website with bandwidth, equipment, etc, etc.
