Went out today with my V3i and CTX3030 to a park that is full of trash; pop tops, can slaw, building debris etc... It is also loaded with clad coins. I go there to practice and tweak my detectors. I have had the V3i for almost 2 years and the CTX3030 for a few months. With the V3i in trash I use their 4x6" shooter with fantastic results. It really allows me to sift through the trash, works great! I only have the stock 11" coil with the CTX3030, but let me tell you, it's circuitry and processing is wonderful at zeroing in on the coins in the trash. The CTX seems to allow me to make a much smaller sweep thus zeroing in on the coins. It's target tracing works largely as claimed, actually distinguishing between multiple targets.

All in all, I would say they are equal in the trash as long as the V3i has the Shooter coil, with the stock 10" double D coil the Whites would not fare well against the CTX3030. I would logically assume the CTX3030 would get more depth with the 11" coil over Whites Shooter, but the area I hunt is soo trashy depth is really not an issue. If you use the White's in trash invest in the 4x6 Shooter and you will do well.

Thanks for posting, that's some great input. I use the 6" coil on my CTX3030, I call it my surgical coil in heavy iron. I'm always amazed at how it picks through the trash.

I absolutly agree If you know how & what the controls do in using a v3i it can be a wonder tool I dont have any of the whites coils besides a 950 eclipse & the stock 10dd my choice for those trashy parks is my 6x8 sed coil there are a great Match & work wonders on it. Id definetly want to try a ctx in the future, but for now my deus is doin awesome in trash. Great info you posted look forward to seeing ur finds

I have read many comparisons between the two and watched several videos comparing the two. Of what I have read and watched your assessment of the two seems spot on. A cpl comparisons and videos were biased toward one machine or the other and that's pretty easy to pick out while reading or watching.

What I like about your assessment is you own both. I plan on purchasing a V3i after the 1st of the year probably in March when i get back from my winter vacation. So in the mean time read and watch all I can. I have an ATP and love it but ready for a new challenge. I also have to keep conditioning my wife that I really need one. She keeps saying I find so much with my ATP why would I need another one. I keep asking her why she needs five $250 purses.

The ATP was a challenge over my ACE 250 and I am confident enough in my ability with it that if it's there I can most often find it and know what I am digging by tone. It will fool me on a rusty washer or something more than anything else even with iron audio on. When i got my ATP I couldn't find anymore with it than my ACE 250 but I have rehunted parks etc with my ATP since and cleaned up. I hunted one park that I had gridded with my ACE 250 and found like $2.30 and did the same with my ATP after i learned it and found another $7.95 in the same grid. Now i want the V3i to try again.

I have hunted with guys that had everything from a bounty hunter to ctx3030 and did as well or better than any of them with the exception of the guys that had the ctx3030 and the etrac and they found deeper targets than me. Anything up to 6" I did as well as those two guys. Deeper targets over 6" I dug 90% trash where they dug about 20% trash.

I rarely use the vdi on my ATP because I like learning the sounds and what my ATP is telling me. My reason for a new V3i is the same I want to learn the sounds that compare to the target i am digging and learning all the options one has with it.

Thanks for the nice post. Judging from the detectors you have I think it would be hard not to do a fair comparison between detectors.

Normsel: given the way you describe yourself and what you are looking for out of a V3i, you will absolutely love it. I have had so much fun learning to use it. As you have discovered, the web is chock full of helpful articles and videos that make learning easy, it just takes time and a test garden.

good luck!

I just got a v3i; also have atp.

atp = wide open; turn on & go

v3i= turn on & go, THEN open it up

...you will not run out of settings, sounds, colors, tones like you would with most any detector.

Moreover, even though you will settle on a 'favorite', as soon as you become bored or the site requires it, you can change the device to your heart's desire.

Will it find more then your atp? who knows.

Will it be more interesting to own/operate? undoubtedly.
