Its a cool item and I like it too BTW. Its a whistle, compass and a magnifiing glass for starting fire from the sun.
I think the first Bakelite was brown.
I cant tell you if it came as a set or the signaling whistle was added later. :dontknow:

Green check or no green check, I still have a question. I suppose bakelite comes in a host of colors (as evidenced by the bright colors of bangle bracelets and Tea Box purses of the 30's and 40's, but the subject looks to be rusted nickel, like just about all buffalos dug up. So is it "plastic" or nickel? Whistles are made from both.
Hello High Plains Digger. It looks like brown Bakelite to me. Many of the bangles are not true Bakelite.

And perhaps the mag glass and the compass were a separate thing and it is a "put together" as any good outdoorsman would do. I would do pretty much the same thing, except for the fact that unless you are in a thick forrest and can't see the mountains for the trees, a cheap compass isn't much good.
Why not? Its good as long as it always points north.

Heres my compass and magnifying glass fire starter. Its credit card size and also comes with a knife, screwdriver, can opener, toothpick, tweezers and rule.

OK HPD I was originally responding to this statement about the bright colors. True Bakelite was only made in two varying colors: brown and black and dates 1907-1945.. It could only be made in these two colors because of the extreme heat it endured while being cured. You may be mistaking Bakelite for Catalin. Its a common error and here is a very good link from eBay. http://reviews.ebay.com/Bakelite-amp-Catalin-All-you-need-to-know-Testing_W0QQugidZ10000000000748322

As far as which was first brown or black? I do not know.

Earlier when I posted that I thought this item was solved by bramblefind, I primarily meant that bradyboy's question on post #12 seemd to suggest there was still some doubt. Sometimes I do it myself and don't fully read or notice previous comments. So with this said, here's a few tid-bits that may help expound on the subject of Bakelite. And according to what I've read on the Bakelite history, it appears the first color was a "black" Thomas Edison phonographic "record."

SBB

The term Bakelite originated from Leo H. Bakeland who filed the first U.S. Patent # 942,699 on July 13, 1907.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is a brown Bakelite whistle; not nickel, not Catalin. I think thats a given and I believe it was proven by the supporting links.. I was just trying to make the point that brown Bakelite was made before those cheerful colored bangles. Actually they (colored bangles) are not really Bakelite at all but are commonly sold as such. Bakelite does not come in a host of colors. The link I posted explains it very well and I hope everyone reads it..

The whistle is indeed solved but Bradyboy wants to know if this came as a set.

As far as black being made before brown thanks for the information. :icon_thumright:
