Ok i have been researching the two for quite some time and my question is, can i buy the v3i and run it like the vx3? You know turn on and go as whites catalog claims the vx3 is more of a turn and hunt machine. Reason i ask is i like the wireless headphone idea, the coil and the rechargeable battery pack offered with the v3i, but i don't need or want all the custom features. I also don't want to buy the vx3 then upgrade headphones battery and coil options and end up paying nearly as much as i would have if i had just bought the v3i. Maybe in time it might be nice to have the extras but for now i want to feel some what confident in the machine as i learn it in factory presets and not always wonder if everything is set just right and so on. I have a dfx that i have had good luck with but i can't say i fell in love with all the special programs and adjustments. would i even gain anything going to a v series over my dfx? especially if i only plan to use factory presets for time being? Thanks again, farmerboy

The preset programs for the v3i are pretty good. Just remember that a few tweeks and they are even better, and if you get them outta wack just reset them.

From what I've heard the V3i isn't much more complicated than the DFX but I can't say for sure cause I've never had the DFX. The only other programable detector that I had before the V3i was the Eagle which I thought was very simple but I never really did much programing with it. Basically I went from the MXT to the V3i and haven't turned back and the MXT is now backup only. I personally recommend the V3i because of the extras that you get with it, especially the battery stuff and the D2 coil along with more programing options than the VX3. My V3i to me has been pretty much turn on and go since I put the program in it that I like. I might tweak the RX gain down sometimes when there's a really trashy area I'm trying to work and also when there's a lot of emi but other than that for me I turn it on, ground balance and away I go.

I have the vx3 and while I do like it, I believe the v3i is the better value. You get the D2,rechargeable batt, wireless headset etc.
Also, there is no reason you can't get a v3i and use the presets (just like the vx3). But be warned the factory presets tend to be a bit weak (imo). I'm also assuming the presets for the two machines are the same.
My biggest complaint about the vx3 is that there are no slots for custom programs. You just have to tweak one of the preset programs. Just silly imo. Whereas the v3i has 99 I think.
If I had it to do over I'd get the v3i just for what I believe is a better value for price.

thank you all very much so far it sounds like v3i gets the vote not scared of doing a few tweeks just want to be able to run it straight outta box till i gain confidence wasn't sure if you could do that with the v3i with much success from the sound of it preset programs are ok but you need to adjust and tweek to really see the plus side of buying the machine.

There is so much to like about White's and their detectors. One of my favorite things about their detectors is that they include presets in all their machines. This allows new users to hit the ground running without having to know anything more than how to turn it on and which end to point at the ground. The V3i can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. Having owned both the DFX and the V3i, I think the V3i is much more complicated than the DFX. Meaning that if you want to utilize all the capabilities of the V3i there is a lot more to learn than the DFX because it has so many more adjustments available. But there is absolutely no reason to be wary of the V3i because of the presets which you can use as-is, tweak a little, tweak a lot, or replace altogether to match your comfort level.

Hey thank you all for the great info! I'm not the kind of person to just go on an impulse and come home with a new machine. Been reading alot bout the v3i for a year or so but for every pro some one always had a con to throw right back. I really appreciate your honest advice. I'm certain i will be ordering a new v3i soon and will let you all know how it goes. On a side note supposed to get another 3-4 inches of snow tomorrow on top of the 2 feet we already have so it might be a bit yet! If any one has any general pointers on some basic tweaks to the factory presets to help me get started that would be greatly appreciated as well. Farmerboy856

Go on White's forum and download Magic's V3i programs. I use his coin and jewelry program and it works great. You will also see what changes are made compared to the stock presets and learn your way around the menu before your detector gets to you. You can download the manual as well.
