Just bought an AT pro yesterday. And I have to say I LOVE IT!!! Found all kinds of stuff and lots of wheats. I have an old church I have been hunting today which obviously has not been hunted very much because I pulled out 3 wheats in my first 10 minutes... I am using my AT in pro coin mode. What should i be listening for the silver. Surely there is some around there... Right???

Finding wheats doesn't necessarily mean silver is still there. I have found many sites where hunters must have cherry picked the silver and left behind the pennies. All the obvious places have been hunted for years, so finding silver isn't that easy.

I think most of the picking gets done right after the coins are dropped. Pennies (polished copper) are darker in colour than all other denominations (polished nickel) and so are the hardest to see on the ground (especially when discoloured). They are also the coins that people least care to pick up when they drop. We know that it usually takes a while for stuff to get buried out of sight and stay there. So, out of every however many coins that get dropped on the ground, I would expect that >80% of the ones that stay on the ground to get buried are pennies (and my finds are consistent with this).

I think that the presence of the pennies would indicate that other detectorists either haven't been there or didn't do a good job. How many people who post on this forum would pass up digging a coin just because it's probably a penny? If it sounds to me to even be similar to a coin, then the ground on top of it is about to get broken. Keep swinging and dig everything that hits cleanly. Then, when things stop hitting cleanly, start digging the dirty signals. Odds are that there is some silver somewhere nearby. You'll just have to dig a lot of pennies and pulltabs to get to it.

I myself like pennies... Well wheat pennies, just as much as any other coin. It's so exciting to pull them out of the ground. I am still getting used to the pro mode to. It puts off so much information so fast I bet I am passing over a lot of decent targets. I am going to keep working this church for a few days

Keep it in pro mode, learn it like the back of your hand and dig everything so you can learn your tones. Don't always go by the vdi reading, get you ears trained to the tones you will find more good targets that way you need to get about 100 hours on your machine or so before you really get fluent with it!!! Good Luck and Happy Hunting !! The AT PRO Is a great machine!!!

On the days that i cant find silver with the detector,I break out the big guns and go coin roll hunting with it.....

Lots of sites where cherry picked years ago by hunters using the older detectors that just had disc knobs where they turned up the disc so only the higher conductivity silver coins sounded off. You can do that today, but most of the sites where hunted. You can still find silver by using a sniper coil near the metal fences and sidewalks with rebar in them.

The trick to silver fever is to catch a second fever,When one doesnt come through,The other will,My two favorite things aside from
women are obviously Harleys n Treasure. If i cant find silver,I can find a new route to ride! Always go out a winner!!!

My silver finds are limited but I will have to say nothing is more exciting than recovering a silver target. (No gold yet) However, I would never pass up on anything that suggests "coin", pennies included.

I 100% agree with silver is awesome to find. I hunted last year during summer and fall. This year quite bit already. If the ground is not frozen. I finally found my first silver. A merc . I felt like I won the lottery. I wouldn't trade that for a hundred bucks. Dollars that is,not a fourteen pointer. That would be a hard choice.gl everyone & hh

I'd take the deer. Have you ever priced a deer compared to a merc?

50 in gas,80 in camping fee's,15 for my license,5 for my (shell). And probably a few early mornings.

Ha ha yeah a nice deer would be pretty nice... But back to the church site I went back today and found a old pocket knife a 1902 Indian and possibly my first gold... Well, I know it's gold I just don't know if its plates or not. I will take a pic as soon as I get done cleaning it up

By the way what year Harley is that? I just got done riding mine... Can't pass up this 70+ degree weather

We pulled 15 or so wheats out of my pap's yard with our AT pro and not one silver. So, I don't know either! Haha.

Here's some pics. What do you guys think of the ring?
