A treasure! It thawed in the sun and in the woods today. Tomorrow, not so much.

I would say your discrimination needs a slight tune-up....
Personally I discriminate square nails and cast iron stove doors ...LOL

I don't discriminate cast iron large objects. Some are valuable.

I agree some are expensive however the majority of them are less then $40 and you would still need to move it. Etsy And eBay is full of them for even less then that. Shipping will cost more then it’s worth.

My comment was also tongue and cheek .

Cheers

Pretty neat find. Just for giggles I looked up that address on google street view. Just a big parking lot now...

Nice one Terry! Hard to pass up those big iron signals, and most of the time it's something unique. Did it grunt, or multiple signals that sounds like a cache of coins? I'm guessing cache. Nice catch:icon_thumright:

Nice door Terry, any plans for it yet?

Here's one I recovered from an old church site in the woods.

Nice job Terry, I also would have dug the iron tone...you never really know unless you dig!

That is pretty cool Terry. I personally would not have dug something that large, but it is a nice find.

Good gracious Terry, that's a GREAT find = 20" down in the frozen tundra......

I don't know if I'd have toughed that one out like you did. That had to be a big hole.

If I didn't dig a signal like that, it would bug me later. You believe that, as others have said, that's it a huge cache. You won't find one if you don't dig those signals.

The sites I hunt are predominately 18th and 17th century so I choose to not skip any signals. I have found some awesome iron pieces that look incredible after electrolysis and wax.

Admit it Waterscoop you're justifying it, cause deep down you wish you had a lovely door too. It's not about the money, it's owning, possessing one, displaying it, top shelf recovery iron. :laughing7:

it might be a royal pain in the butt to dig but it is still a very cool find

I would have dug it for sure. The one justifying is Smokey saying they are worth something. Pieces of iron THAT LARGE usually for me have been broken plow tips or discs, tire rims, coiled galvanized pipe, broken water horse trough

But yes I would dig it just in case it was an old milk can full of silver and gold coins.

That thing is in great shape. I can't hardly pass on those big signals like that, I will pull plow points and axe heads up all day. I pulled this one out last year, its about 10" by 12" and I am going to clean it up and do something similar to the second pic here with it.

I dug up one of those about ten years ago at a turn of the century homestead, right next to the one big tree in what had been the front yard. I dug it hoping for a cache. Instead, I got a rusted old stove door and a pit full of river pebbles.

I'd thought that I was the only one, but this doesn't seem to be all that unusual now. How the hell are all of these stove parts getting into the ground?
