Re: ??? what the #@%&*!

M , it's the bottom flue vent to a chicken brooder stove .

Re: ??? what the #@%&*!

HIO I have to go with Moji at this point, he has the most logical explanation.

Michelle, not a door knocker, I have one on my door. No place for the fingers if you have gloves on -------(:>D ------>Michelle.

Not a foot stomper, too fragile. Gollies big feet would break it.

A #$%*&@ is very close.

This picture is from a 1916 poultry magazine .The two double -disc thermostats rested on the floor in tandem under the armature end . The thermostats were flat circular wafer type objects and would raise and lower the the arm - moving the rod connected to the flue . This is not the exact model in question ,but the same principle of operation .

Re: ??? what the #@%&*!

Is there evidence of a large wood-burning stove on the property? This looks like a lever for capping and uncapping the burners on an old stove.

Re: ??? what the #@%&*!

I'm voting for the poultry thingy. It looks almost exactly the same as in the picture. The other pictures don't look like it. I really don't think it is a doorknocker. Yep, chicken thingy. That's my vote.

how the heck did you come up with that? I think you are right on, good detective work!!! I didn't want to believe that it was a Door knocker.

Re: ??? what the #@%&*!

Post Fatal - I went to the US patent web page - searched Poultry brooder stoves - clicked on environmental controls . It wouldn't let me see the pics , so I wrote down some of the older patent #'s - I found that more user friendly search site .

Doc , it's not a foot pedal . Lines 95 - 100 in the patent text explain how it works . The thermostatic wafers raise and lower the arm , not a foot .

Re: ??? what the #@%&*!

Michele,

I believe what you call stops, are actually for rigity. The same as the rib running along the length of the thing.

Without structural support, cast iron is notoriously prone to cracking.

Re: ??? what the #@%&*!

MICHELLE "NO WAY"! Where is the contact point for 'knocking' on the illustrated device? Every one that I have seen had the contact point on the lower edge of the arm for leverage.

But then I haven't seen everything yet, not even you in red flannels.
