Old Spanish Trail
Mojave Desert Roads & Trails

i know this is an older thread, got to looking
around for info and found this info, read the whole article,
as it discusses other spanish trails too, though not in as much detail
see link at end

[The major reason for travel on the Old Spanish Trail was trade between New Mexico and California,
primarily by New Mexican trade caravans, which traveled between Santa Fe and Los Angeles between 1829
and 1848. Caravans usually left on the three-month journey in the fall, primarily carrying woolen
goods produced in New Mexico. They returned the following year, having traded their goods for horses
and mules. The size of caravans seems to vary from year to year. Some of the documented trading parties
include: Antonio Santiesteban and 30 men in 1831; José Avieta and 124 men in 1833-1834; José Antonio
Salazar and 75 men in 1839-1840; Francisco Estevan Vigil and 35 men and others (possibly about 134 people
) in 1841; Tomás Salazar and 170 men in 1843; and Francisco Estevan Vigil and 209-225 men in 1847. Little
or no information seems to be available as to the size of the caravans in 1838, 1840, and 1845. There
are no annual trade caravans identified for 1834-1835, 1835-1836, or 1846. There were other travelers,
such as Santiago Martín, who went to California with 15 men in 1832 for personal reasons rather than
trade.]

some of these #s of people, traveling were quite a substantial #, and just b4 the gold rush,
maybe they, new something, not everyone else did

anyway found the article, and site informative

Does this guy look like a Spaniard? socal.png

His headgear doesn't look Spanish. Did you notice that large, tilted "T" on the right side??

The monuments should jump out at you. See my avatar. Meanings of monuments are whatever you want them to be.

I pointed out the monument, SS pointed out the shadow sign. Two different things. The thread is about non-spanish monuments. Ergo- the face. The monument for me means non-Spanish big F' face. I'm not sure what you were trying to accomplish with your post, but yes meanings of monuments can be whatever you want them to be...but a message is always tailored to target the audience.

OK, usernotfound. In for a penny; in for a pound. The right arrow is pointing out the tilted "T" (which might be a "7"). The upper right arrow, is a large "A" (or upside down "V"). The lower right arrow is indicating a dark shape that looks like an owl. The upper arrow points to a raised "O" that is on the top, front of the man's hat. I used blue lines to outline the large, rugged face and a lot smaller, finer face that's down by the owl shape.

my computer will not let me save this photo 4 some reason, but here i go. start at big square chin, above chin u have lips n form of owl above that u have a nose that i think if u were under it it is a heart, right under the right eye u have a resting stag shadow that has a nice rack.square chin also has a couple slashes on it.

The reason for the face post was due to it's character which is not Spanish looking, I'll post a spanish face later. Regardless of the s/s. League block, owl, "T", heart, pointer, whatever... Just picked a face out of hundreds of pictures and posted it, I have no future plans to return to the area. I believe the Spanish reused/repurposed this monument therefore I posted it, once again back to the purpose of this thread...What Spaniards?
