Could use a little closer picture but looks like a Winchester

At first glance I'll agree. Maybe a model 1873?

Gotta agree on the Model 1873 Winchester. Closer pictures are needed to be positive, but if it looks like it loads from the front of the magazine tube (under the barrel) and has either a 24, or 26 inch barrel, it is a .22 cal., and was made between 1884-1904.

They were also made in 32-20, 38-40 and 44-40, but would have loaded from the sideplate, which yours is missing, so it's hard to tell.

Any markings visible at all ?

The 1866 Winchester had a brass frame. The 1873 was steel.

It's hard to tell without examining the rifle but if it didn't have forend wood it could be a Henry. The way the receiver curves up by the hammer, and the length of the cartridge tube also looks a lot like a Henry. If it is a Henry it is probably older than the '73 Winchester. Would love to know the story behind how it wound up in the creek. A friend of mine was hunting squirrels with his .22 Ruger semi-auto and had to answer natures call. He leaned the rifle up against a tree and looked around for a suitable spot, then forgot where he left the rifle. This was in the spring or early summer when the foilage was heavy. He found it the following fall when the leaves were gone and the grass was brown. Needless to say it was rusted up and ruined by the weather. Anyhow......M ::) nty

It's not a Henry. They all had solid frames, and except for some of the first ones, Henry's had brass frames. They were also all in .44-40 caliber.

Not .44-40(.44WCF) That one didn't come along until 1873. The Henry shot a .44 rimfire cartridge. I do agree that it isn't a Henry rifle. The frame is different.

I'll respectfully disagree ;D until shown otherwise. I've never seen or heard of a brass frame 1873 regardless of caliber. I've been googling to find one but I can't.

I've been having a lot of those lately, too. Maybe it's contagious and we've both caught it from the forum here. ;D

I think it may be a Model 1873 Winchester Long Barrel, actually.

It is clear that it had a wood foreend grip which rules out Henry Rifle. The dimensions look right. The frame looks like an exact match. But I couldn't tell you what caliber.

Here is a reference photo. It is a short barrel but is close enough.

I was just throwing wood on the fire guys. I never was a fan of the lever guns but this one is a heck of a find and a great wall hanger and conversation piece. Montyw
