Frank, if you don't hunt fields that get plowed, you're right. Most aren't over 8 inches, but in plowed fields, they can and will be much deeper.I must live in a rare place, Maryland. I have never seen a coin over 10" deep. Other small objects, but no coins. I can't really imagine coins being deep in rocky soil. For one thing there is usually little decayed vegetation to cover them.
Now as for depth, my detector tells me how deep they are so I dig the ones that are over app. 6".
I have detected in most of the 48 states so I have seen all kinds of soil, rock, swamp, etc.

I use the Vibra Probe 580 as a pinpointer and like it much better than the Whites Bullseye 2 that I used to use. It has a few features I prefer over the Propointer. Tip only detection, auto off and water proof.
As Tnguns said, it's like asking which truck is better.....99% of the time, the answer will be whatever is being used by the person you ask.
