This item was found near a Centurion Homestead. It was very rusty so I ran it in a tumbler for a couple days. It cleaned up well but, I have no idea what it's for.
The ends were threaded, they are almost gone, and it is cast iron or cast steel. I don't think it is a stirrup or spur. Any ideas? :icon_scratch:

Most I've seen are like these but, I'm no expert on spurs, also the part that would have held the little spike wheel is about an inch wide inside measurement.

Looks like it could have came off a piece of furniture or something in that nature were a decorative piece or even just something brass would have screwed on the end there and the bottom of the artifact looks decorative with the design, even could have been attached to a buggy, furniture, postbox, etc. Just my guess, Good luck with the ID! :occasion14:

Paleopilot, if you know what company's sales-catalog the scan you posted is from, and its time-period, please tell me. Thanks.
Hello Cannonball, The catalog is an 1870s-1880s, (William Heck - Manufacturers of Saddlery), California, Missouri.
You can access the PDF download by visiting, Rose Antiques, then click the "miscellaneous catalog downloads" link. Scroll though some of these unbelievably cool old publications!

I think you are close, it looks like it could hold a small wheel and carry a fair size amount of weight. I'm gettin kinda burned-out searching for now. Thanks for the reply. :icon_thumright:

How about for an old lamp shade?

I think it is some kind of bracket for a sewing machine, cash register, or some other piece of equipment, that was meant to be mounted in this configuration.

This is one of the more interesting 'what is its' I've seen. Creskol the top (could be the bottom) wouldn't need a nut as it appears one hole is larger and the other one tapped and the larget 2 tangs look like slip fits. I looked at railroad lanterns and rugbeaters last night to no avail. Footrail bracket? Handrail bracket? Idunno.

I like creskol's art work. That's what I was thinking as well. Is it heavy enough to be a bracket for a pump handle?

I also looked at treadle sewing machine stands. Especially pitman arm connectors.

You are right .. the top could be the bottom, but I am failing to see in the photos provided, that one hole is bigger and one is tapped. As far as the tangs go, this is what I see:
