Hi Everyone!!! I found this iron item when I was young in my backyard at my Mom's home. It measures 5.5" long, 3" wide and is .5" in depth. We lived on what was an old farm and the area dates back to the 1700's. There used to be an old Blacksmith's shop within a half mile of my Mom's home. On the property, I also found an old carved bone die (single dice!), below the old oak tree which is about 110+ years old.
A local member of the historical society suggested it might be a guide blade from an old horse drawn plow. It has no sharp breaks on the iron and the dimples on the iron appear to be from a tool used to create this piece, like tongs, but this is just my idea about the dimples.
Thanks for any and all thoughts!

Like to see a pic of that die...
you should definitely detect around the roots of that tree...
and everywhere on property.

I thought it was stone and some type of scraper until I read your post. Neat old find, whatever it is.

Definitely iron, my brother fashioned it into an ax with a branch from the apple tree. We though it was an Indian artifact, until my mom told us it was iron and probably from "the farmer".

Could the piece have been attached to a stick or pole some way and used by a person to open a "groove" in dry dirt for planting/seeding down a row ??? ... just a thought from an old farmer ...

A furrowed brow for a furrow tool...

I thought it may have been a 'hand' tool also. I believe this more and more now, due to it's beveled edge and lack of any sharp broken pieces on it's surface that might indicate that is was attached at one point to another piece.
I can't imagine it was an ironing iron blank as it does have this beveled edge down the entire length, I do not see that on any old irons....
It doesn't appear that it was ever really super sharp on this beveled edge, as I do not see excessive wear or chipping. So, plowing relatively soft soil seems the most likely use. I am just curious as to how it may have been affixed to a handle given the lack of indications of attachment, so maybe it was attached in a very non permanent manner.
This is a little bit of a head scratcher!!! I love a mystery!
