I believe it's (most of) this... a trouser strap.
I wasn't aware of 'trousers' being a common usage term in the US. Thought it was pretty much only what we say instead of 'pants' over here.

Not sure when Americans made the transition to 'pants', but in American Civil War reenacting, we call them trousers.

Does anyone have the etymology on the trouser "trout"? I'm told it only has one eye.
