Here is another pic. The way its made I think the small side swings to 90 degrees and was used in that position. and the other side is just a cover for when its closed. small ink stamp? with stamp part rotted away and knob missing from top.
Could the other side hold the ink pad?

If it had a stamp in it I dont think there would be any room left for ink pad. I have tried you patent links but cant get them to take a DRP No. , think they only take newer CE No.
Cant one side hold the stamp and the other side the ink pad? Everytime it closes the pad would compress and re-ink the stamp. Ingenius little folding ink stamp. But then again maybe not lol. But I like your idea of a folding stamp.

The side I thought could have the stamp has the pin with spring through it so the stamp would have sat out far enough it would have filled the lid side when closed. When closed there is very little space about 1/8th between pin and cover side.

Re: what is this

That pin kinda puts a damper on that idea. I think this has the potential to be an infamous TN "what is it" if you can generate enough interest to keep the thread going.

I have a feeling that somebody will get this thing IDed. We have good Patent information, just haven't found the "avenue" to search it. Plus as an added bonus, two of these whatsits have been found by different people. Its only a matter of time. Have faith my friends.

I dont think it looks like somthing used that way but i could be wrong.

From the drp numbers I have found I think it is a 1898 patent. I found a 54*** No. for feb 1890. So I think 50*** drp is late 1898.

Re: what is this

Maybe I found that patent number - but it is in German and the picture doesn't look like the object-

Re: what is this

I was just trying to work on a little translation and I only got that Bleistift is pencil and Federhalter is fountain pen. So maybe some sort of combination pencil/fountain pen thing?

Not sure if this link will work directly but I went to this search form-

http://depatisnet.dpma.de/DepatisNet/depatisnet?action=einsteiger

and then in the Publication Number just put in DE then 50863 then hit start search and viewed the PDF.

Re: what is this

Google translation calls it a "united blelstift and spring holder"(federhalter)

Re: what is this

I think it is a chaulk holder. Chaulk was much thicker back in the day.

Re: what is this

I remember my elementary teachers having chalk holders and this does look familiar, but it has been too long ago to say positively that's what it is. Monty

Re: what is this

The hole is way too small Dia. and length for normal school chalk but I found this site , if you click the blue number on "17" it goes to a page that I dont really understand but mentions cosmetic containers and combination writing implements. So maybe one of those but still no pic or definite ID.

Thanks for every ones ideas and help, I know this is a worthless item but I sure would like to know for sure what it is.

Re: what is this

I think this is solvable. It has been found by several members. The only thing that may be keeping the interest down on this object is the poor pictures. It would help if we had some clearer pics including closeups of the writing.
