WHAT IS THIS.? STONE CANNON BALL.?

I need help identifying this...! My dad dug two of these up with an excavator about 13 years ago while laying water lines in a rural area in Falls Mills, VA. It weighs approximately 4lbs.! We've been trying to figure out what this is for a long time.! It appears to have grooves around the side as if its been shot out of a barrel.? lol we just dont know so if anyone on here can help identify this that would be great.! Here are some pics... I went to see the guy and his wife ask me to come back. I will be getting it to photo and when I do I will post it. His is about 6" across if I remember correctly . They used 600' circles as part of their sites.
