I need help identifying this...! My dad dug two of these up with an excavator about 13 years ago while laying water lines in a rural area in Falls Mills, VA. It weighs approximately 4lbs.! We've been trying to figure out what this is for a long time.! It appears to have grooves around the side as if its been shot out of a barrel.? lol we just dont know so if anyone on here can help identify this that would be great.! Here are some pics... Check it.! 20170226_093557.jpg20170226_093638.jpg20170226_093728.jpg20170226_094022.jpg

Not a stone cannon ball. It would have lodged crooked in the barrell and blown up the gun. May be manmade however, due to the lines.

It's the work of the priest. The last picture is the best for seeing the cross. At the top of cross is the Jesuit initials. Also you can make out the other words. It says Peters fate. There is other symbolism on it too. Nice find. I know of about four others like it.

Didn't early people used to hunt by whipping rocks from a rope with a pouch? That's the first thing that comes to mind for me. Pretty cool finds!

Have you ever checked it with a magnet it looks like some rust on it.

Looks like a hammer stone. You can see where it was lashed onto a handle with leather straps, that were probably water soaked and sun dried. Very well used. Nice!

It's just one of those items where it's context and location are key to its identity. If it's in a waterway it could just be a tumbled river rock, but among other native american artifacts it could have been a grinding stone. It's not like Native Americans really made their grinding stones so much as they just found them along rivers and used them. The longer they stayed in one place the more it got used.

Like I said , it's the work of the preist. On this side of the stone is the side of the false one. Satan and his bunch. The whole stone has a story as you turn it. I just adjusted the contrast and brightness to bring out features. It's a warning. 2017-03-24%2011.51.22.jpg

interesting item
not keen on the answers
What's interesting is the cross markings worn into this item
Marking might be rub burns, as it was attached to a handle of some kind - just a thought

My first thoughts were broken bocce or croquet ball and you found both halves the antique ones look different than the modern onesvintage-croquet-ball_2.jpg
