Hello All,

I figured I'd just post this here--someone will know the answer, and it will be an easy "Solve."

On one of my maps there are two mills that are listed as an "S.S. Mill." Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on that one. The other mills are just listed as "Mill."

???

Any help is appreciated.

Steam Saw Mills, maybe I should not have used the word portable, but somewhere in the deep recesses of my memory bank that adjective came to mind. The two Steam Mills I know of, both had permament structures, both were much later in use than the vast majority of saw mills in this area, and both were not next to a stream/dam.
Steam Saw Mills, cough cough, now known as SS Mills? ;D I believe were in use in late 1800's into 1900's. Most of the saw mills in this area were built on streams with a dam and they are almost all from the 1700's to very early 1800's.

Don

Researching for this topic I did read that some steam saw mills were portable, and some were not.

Listings such as the following confirm that "S. S. Mill" is indeed a designation for "steam sawmill":

Thanks Don (guess #2)--and thank you so much for the confirmation, PBK!

Awesome! I had just never seen that abbreviation before...so know I know. :)
