Hi!
Yes I listed on there too to see if anybody could give me any info. If you read the item description you will see this. Last time I posted on this site I stated that I had it on there too and it seemed that people were getting upset and were saying that I was spamming so I reposted this time without the ebay link in there.

What size is it and how deep down was it? I've never seen one real or otherwise (and would appreciate a link to one if anyone else can provide one). Yes, I did see Gildilks' link to the ebay auction previously, but it disappeared.

Hi!
It is 1 1/4 inches long and was only about 4 inches deep. But the dirt in which I found it in was brought in for our driveway. The dirt was brought in about two years ago by the township. This was the first time that I have every used a metal detector. I found two newer dimes and then found this.

OK, the first thing I would do is see if it is Silver. Have you had it tested?
Also, you may not be able to remove this item from e-bay once the bidding has started.

looks like an awful lot of trouble to stamp so much on such a small bar, especially considering the Confederacy was more in the business of seizing and shutting down mints instead of making coin, even when the machinery was in place and ready to use,, why bother with all the stamping for what then would have amounted to looks like less than one dollar's worth of what ever it is...........also looks more lead to me than silver....

could it be tarnished? it does look like a troy ounce silver ingot. i found one very similar exept mine obviously wasnt civil war vintage and mine was stamped .999 fine. same size and shape though.

I was suspicious at first when I saw it was a first timer posting such a find, but you seem to be for real. If the item is fake it should bring about $100, and if its real somewhere between $500 and $1000 we'll see what happens. The font on the item would suggest it's from a mint, or meant to look like it. Since your also new to ebay I think a lot of people will think its a fake. The finish on the item looks a lot like the Indian or Pakistani acid knock off aging finish used to duplicate fake civilwar swords. Plus the fact that you say you don't know what it is releases you from any guaranty or refund obligation. But I'm sure somebody on this forum maybe able to tell you if it's a fake or not Good luck!

Hi!
Thanks to everyone for all the responses. Does anyone happen to know where I could research this item at on the web? Or any books I can look in at the library? I am curious to find out some more on the history of the item. Thanks
Gil

First time on Treasurenet.
Third time on E-bay.
First find with a metal detector.
If this is for real, you should have posted here first. Did you test for silver content?
Somebody on this forum should be able to help. What state was this found in?

Your auction is over in 3 days. The quickest way is to take it to a pawn shop or jeweler. They will probably tell you for free. My guess is the 937 means 93.7%. If you had the time here is a formula: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,24080.0.html
According to e-bay, you live in New Jersey. Is this where you found it?

Google ebayfakes These guys can tell you anything about civil war stuff and they have seen it all. They can help you Findout what it is. Personally Id stop the auction and find out the true value of it first, you might be cheating yourself out of something very valueable.
