I need some help. My computer seems to accumulate hundreds of Adware Tracking cookies in only a few minutes. It will accumulate over 500 in about 15 minutes until my laptop freezes up. I keep running my SuperAntiSpyware and it removes them but they keep coming back. I have never had this many tracking cookies in so short of a time period.

Is this a Virus? What can I do to fix it?

I tried to restore but it says Restoration Incomplete Your computer cannot be restored.

Can anybody help? Any suggestions? I am not the best with computers but I have restored in the past to an earlier date and removed viruses in the past by searching the virus name on another laptop but I dont know what to search for. Why cant I restore? thanks.

I have Windows XP.

Please do NOT delete this thread. It contains computer "fix" info which some of us non-computer-savvy users need to learn to do. My thanks go to each of you who contributed some of the information.

Hello CBG. I didnt receive your PM because my box was full. I hope you are well.

CBG, I want to remove the picture of myself because I have been recieving threats, some direct and some very vague. I dont want my picture out on the internet. I cant remove just the photo because it was used in a reply.

Thanks RJC

BigCypress,

Please don't take advice from RJC. You might was well bust out the cyanide pills. I'm thinking of a Samwise Gamgee quote from LOTR, nothing related to the current subject...

Sam: Hey, Stinker! Don't go getting too far ahead.

Frodo: Why do you do that?

Sam: What?

Frodo: Call him names, run him down all the time.

Sam: Because... because that's what he is, Mr. Frodo. There's naught left in him but lies and deceit. It's the ring he wants; it's all he cares about.

Thanks crispin. That helps a lot. You have been a big help here. (sarcasm) I'm surprised you have time to help me between saving lives and all... (more sarcasm)

BCH, I had the exact same problem as you. I have an 8 year old desktop with XP.
I used to run SuperAntiSpyware once or twice a week and it would find about 50 items. Then, about 2 weeks ago, it went crazy, finding 600 every few minutes. I have CCleaner, SuperAnti and AVG. I kept running them, and couldn't keep up with the amount I was getting.
I downloaded the latest updates for the 3 programs, then I went to safe mode, and ran them all, and AVG found a virus. I deleted the virus, and everything is back to normal.
How do you get to advanced settings on AVG, I can't find it.

This seems to be the best match with my problem. How do I go into safe mode?

Sorry to sound stupid but my knowlege of computers is limited.

crispin what would you call somebody that doesnt help, has no intention of helping but just posts to aggravate?

Does that fit the definition of a troll?

TOP DEFINITION
troll
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument

1. Turn off your computer.
2. Turn your computer back on.
3. When the screen displays your computer's brand name (e.g., Dell, HP, Toshiba, Gateway, etc) repeatedly tap the F8 key.
4. You will be given a list of options. Unless you absolutely need the internet for what you need to do in safe mode, select "boot in safe mode", NOT "boot in safe mode with networking".
5. Safe mode will look very weird compares to normal windows. This is expected.
6. Do what you need to do (i.e., run AVG).
7. When you are finished, shut down or restart your computer as normal.
8. Your computer will reboot into normal mode.

edit: Apparently back in the day you repeatedly tapped F8 not held it

Well, I can't say that I have been more offended in the past....but on the other hand, I can't say that I have been less offended in the past either. I appreciate you mocking my profession... "I'm surprised you have time to help me between saving lives and all... (more sarcasm)"

This last statement of yours officially severs any communication you and I will ever have in the future. Never comment in any of my threads and I will never comment in any of yours.

I have dedicated my life to helping my fellow man. The sacrifices I have made do not need to be recounted here. You and I are officially OVER, FINIS, THE END. Stay away from my threads, you have lost that privilege. I pray to God you never need my peer's help. But if you do, I pray to God that you receive them more openly.

Also I told you that as soon as I fix this revenge virus (that you have suggested was sent to me by your friend), I am gone from Treasurenet.

You have made your vague threats loud and clear and I want no part of it. Im going to a place were I will have no internet signal. I am leaving in 5 days.

I apologize crispin. You are obviously upset. A doctor is an honored and much needed profession. I was just trying to defend myself from your vague threats and insinuations.

I dont hate you. I dont hate anybody. And I dont believe you or your friend put this virus on my computer. But its very aggravating and Im trying hard to fix it and it didnt appear that you were trying to help me.

I can stay away from your threads. I am hoping other members will post their opinions to help you make an ID. It appears you may have found something but I cant make any positive ID and Im hoping others will be able to help you. I can stay away no problem because Im leaving town, going to a place with an extremely weak signal. Take care.

Eset. Free Virus Scan | Online Virus Scanner from ESET

https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/sem/

I have hit these^^ with some nasty Trojans (bad) and they whipped AVG, Norton substantially.
If you are using XP, Microsoft ended all security updates, hot patches, etc. That means XP is vulnerable.

Trust me. I have put both of these to major tests. They are free. Malwarebytes has a premium version that gives you real time protection.

So WTF...are you guys in high school? :laughing7: Big Cy, if you are being threatened...here on T-net report it to a mod. Otherwise remove their head from their shoulders!!:laughing7: Problem solved.:icon_thumright:

All a mod will do is delete a few comments. And lets hope it doesn't escalate to violence. I have heard of this happening lol.

Yes a few threats have been made to me but it was like several weeks ago. Just when I thought it was over, it popped up again with some vague remarks on 2 threads today. Revenge virus? I had no idea someone would be looking for revenge against me. But I googled revenge virus and it appears a possibility.. But a person would have to be a little crazy to seek revenge outside of TN for a comment(s) that were made days or even weeks ago... I dont believe my virus is revenge.

I removed the extension "Google Docs" and the problem seems to have disappeared. But this has happened twice before and it came back.

OK I removed the extension Google docs and it appears the problem is solved. I dont know how it got on my computer. It appears problem solved but it may pop up again. My brother says he has never heard of a computer accumulating so many Adwares in such a short time period.

Did AVG actually find a virus?

oh crap now I hear music on my laptop and nothing else is open.

Stop using a windows based Microsoft operating system and go to Linux based or a Chrome operating system.
Microsoft and Windows is junk and you pay a lot for it.
Just say NO, TO MICROSOFT and use a different OPS
