I have found some shoe buckles, but none like this. The curious thing is the lion and the roman numeral V on the front. Do you have any information about the place you found it? What else did you find during the hunt, and how old were the other items? Any Civil War history? Way too small to be a belt plate if it is under 2'' wide.

It looks French origin to me. Other than that I am clueless to what it is.. It may have been attached with a ribbon of some sort. But I dont think its a medal.

This lion seems to have the same stance and it is from an Scottish kilt belt buckle.

I think Griffins have the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. that head could be "griffinish" but it doesn't have wings.

So you found some Civil War relics in the same area? My gut feeling was that it was a military relic of some sort.
