From what I can tell, it was originally painted with a brass or gold colored stove paint. Try a magnet on it; if it doesn't stick then it's copper, if it does than it's metal. The back small extension was designed to be hung on a nail so that the horseshoe would face up (so that your luck didn't fall out). I'm a little thrown as to what the holes on either side would have been for? Possibly a small sign that said, "Luck" or "Good Luck" would have hung there.



It most likely was a small token either won, or given as a gift.

It looks like it has threaded holes, so that's probably a clue right there.
Also, any chance it isn't supposed to be bent?
What if this were straight? Humm....

Was told it is a governor off a hit and miss engine. No reason to doubt it!
