What Is "Clad"

Hello,

I'm a newbie and this is a dumb question, but what is everyone referring to when they say "clad"? I looked up the word in the dictionary and found just what I thought it would say, but it never referred to coins? Are there particular coin or metal types that are considered "clad" and others that are not?

Thanks

Ryan

Re: What Is "Clad"

Hi guy and welcome to the forum. Clad money is to us guys who detect, new money we find. Older coins are usually more valuable than clad money. Good coins to look for might be Silver Mercury dimes, Roosevelt Silver dimes, War nickels, these are from 1942-1945, V-nickels, Barber coins, Seated coins and so on.

A good source for coin values is a Red Book a guide book of United States Coins. Good Luck and hope this helped some.

By the way I found over 4 thousand clad coins last year using a ACE 250 metal detector. I also found lots of other good coins, including silver, Indian head pennies and lots of Wheat penny's.

Re: What Is "Clad"

in 1965-present silver coins were bonded to a copper core:clad
to save the gov some money on rising price of silver

in 1982 memorial lincoln pennies went from copper to a copper zinc blend:zinc cents
to save gov money on rising copper cost.

anyone correct me if I have dates mixed up

Re: What Is "Clad"

Welcome Ryan!
I asked the very same question... so no worries!
Clad is something that I find alot of. I have not found anything older than 1962 - boohoo.
Then again, I mainly search elementary schools so that is to be expected!
