I was reading some of the stuff on here and it donned on me. It would be interesting to know what type of things people have found in their own yards. Any caches? Anything of real interest?.
When I first started detecting I used my new detector to cover the yard. I haven't been back over it with my Minelab. I'll bet if i did, I might even find some older things. I don't have alot of depth with my Whites Spectrum and it does lousy the way I have it set for gold. Anyways, I found a 1952 coin about the size of a silver dollar made of brass with a baby on it. I figure it was a birth coin. ALong with this I have found a nudie coin (heads/tails) and pieces of an old bracelet plus the usual clad. In my neighbors yards when I have been lucky enough to get permission to hunt them, I have found a few Mercs and some older pennies plus some cool costume rings, lead soldiers, brass lipstick holders, old foreign coins, and a huge anvil shaped block of iron. Nothing too exciting, but it's always fun to imagine who used the yard years ago. Oh, I almost forgot! I was allowed to hunt my neighbors yard across the street and went first with my spectrum. Found two Hyvis oil tokens in one yard! In all my time detecting I have found only one other one of these and I found two in one day. Then i was not fully satisfied with my spectrum and wanted to see if I had left anything behind, so I went over the yard again with my Minelab. I was getting a very weak signal near the front steps of the house, and the owner was sitting on the steps watching me detect. He was re-doing the lawn so he didn't care much how big a hole I had made. When I got down about 6" my signal disappeared. I checked the pile next to the hole and found a nnice old 10 Kt. gold ring in it. I offered it to him since I really couldn't hide it and it was his property after all. He said, "No, you found it, so it's yours". That was a happy day. 8)

Good finds, Coinshooter. I found a 1918 Mercury dime in my backyard the day I bought the detector, which surprised me since the house was built in 1958. I also found about three bucks in clad change, several wheaties in there. That's about it, but that Merc. was my first silver coin since I took up detecting again after about 20 years out of the loop.

oldest coin I found in my back yard was an 1800's Indian cent. (don't remember date) most favorite Find(S) 2 handmade padlocks.

Found some mercs, wheats, a silver sliegh bell, a silver coat button, old zippo lighter. Still looking when I get bored. (oh yah found some clad stuff too.) Cladius.

1802 Large Cent at my GF's house. I'm over there 75% of the time, and whats hers is mine and vice versa, so to me it counts 8)

That's cool on the large cent. Out here on the west coast we're lucky if we find a wheatie. 8)
I think the things you find in your own yard are somehow more special than all the other places you find stuff.
I went out last night at low tide and found a 14Kt gold ring, and the night before found a nice silver class ring.
The search continues! 8)

As I have been posting in "Todays Finds", I am in the middle of searching my back yard right now. So far I found some newer pennies, a 1951D wheatie, some keys wrapped and taped up in a foil coffee packet, a round copper or brass gasket, like a crush gasket an old electical junction box, and about 1/2 pound of old nails. Nothing exciting yet, but it is helping me practice and learn the sounds my machine is making and what they are telling me, and it's helping. Anyway, if my yard holds wheaties, then it also holds silver or better!

My previous dectector was an el cheapo the only things I have found so far in my yard is a 63 quarter, a 53 penny a lot of spent shell casings and bolts but I've only covered about a 1/4 of an acre and I've got 15 plus acres to search, when my Whites Classic finally gets here ( sloooooow mail) hope to find more.

Hey all,
The best things I've found in my yard sofar is a 1913 Indiana License plate, an 1894 IH, and a 1958 & 42 Quarter...
My house was built around 1912, and it's pretty close to downtown, so there is a lot of trash... If I tried to dig all the signals, it would take a life time. I was thinking of making me some type of shaker-box and dig the top foot or two down, and just check out everything...

Lets see, the things I have found in my own yard are:
-1922 king george penny
-two 1941 mercury dimes
-one 1952 roosevelt dime
-two lead indians
-one pewter JR. deputy badge
-one celluloid starch token from 1800's
-three 1943 P wartime nickels
-three (1942, 1955, 1946) silver quarters
-silver pin of a ladies head
-brass pin of an indians head
-a pair of porcelane earings
-one 1914 S barber quarter
-one 1904 barber dime
-three silver plated spoons
-countless whteaties
-a very large slug from a bullet
... and the search continues.

It doesnt matter how many times you search your yard, it always seems like you have missed a spot. Im still finding things

;D

Hello all ,

My best find in my yard is the first coin i found with my detector and is still the best find i have,

I purchased a whites XLT last January but there was to much snow on the ground to use it so one day while i was snow blowing my driveway I decided to clear a little off the front lawn so i could see how it works, I turned it on set it to coins and started, one step off my front porch had my first beep 6 inches down and dug up a 1812 half dollar. I was realy excited ! My house was built in 1970 so i never expected to find anything that old. I am hooked on this hobby and having alot of fun.

Good hunting ,
Bob

Wow Ut., how's that for luck? I need to search my yard again with my Sovereighn. 8)

Thanks Coinshooter. I'm waiting for the thaw to hopefully add to the collection. The LC was found with a Soveriegn, my weapon of choice.

I still live on my family's homestead from when they moved here from Germany in the 1800s. So far I have found a civil war token, a civil war button, one walking liberty half, two mercury dimes, 4 silver dimes (Rosie's), a 1914 D Penny (key date), at least 8 or 9 wheat pennies, 1 V nickle, my old cap pistol and sheriff badge (50 years old) about 6 inch's deep, lots of bridle pieces, spoons, ax head, hinges, two little tea cups, Missouri tax token, and lots of odds-n-ends including square nails. Everytime I hunt my yard after a heavy rain, I still get surprises with my finds. If I didn't have so many trees, I would scrape off the top 4 inchs and start over :) HH BRINK

Those old yards can really reveal alot about the past owners. My house only dates to about 1948-52, so I try and look around the neighborhood for older ones when I can.

In my current home, a few nice items but mostly so-so. It was built in 1871 by a Civil War vet. I've found some stuff from the Victorian era, a Merc Dime, a few wheaties and the like, and a couple bucks worth of reasonably modern clad. I found a few older hot wheels (in bad condition) and those sorts of things as well.

In my previous home, I was quite lucky. It was a 1854 built home with a little over 60 acres of land. The home & land have some ACW history to them, and there used to be a previous home there that had Colonial & AWR history. I found everything from colonial coins, relics (including buttons), bottles etc to modern clad. I found an Eagle plate near a tree in the front yard. Tons of minnies, including some bite-downs. I let the new owner (who is also a detectorist) keep a vast majority of the items (including the belt plate & all of the ACW & earlier dated coinage) because I felt they should stay with the house. Hopefully he will do the same down the road.

Hi,
So far in my yard I have found lots of odd nails some were sq. In the drive way I found just clad about $1.25, pop tops, nails, washers ect. In the back yard more nails, about 25 ft of old electric wire, more nails, 1/2 of a kids toy gun ( I think cap gun). Out by the stone wall an old chisel and what looks like a old model t windshield. I was discussed to dig it up at the time because I was only using a trowel. The windshield is intact. I had other signals for large metal objects so I have to go out this spring and dig somemore. I hope to find some old bottles since it looks like it was a farmers dump. It was pasture land 100 years ago.

Our home is a 2 story Colonial that was built in 1869.. It sits on a 1/2 an acre of land in an old town. There was a log cabin on the property for some time before the land was sold to the man who built the home for a total cost to completion of $750 in 1869.. I have found silver from the late 1800s thru the 1900s - 1 large cent and a 2 cent piece so far.. I have not had the chance to fully detect the entire property yet.. I've only went over the back yard a couple of times since moving in back in Dec. before the snow hit. Tonight we have recieved another 7 or 8 inches and it's still coming down. I will surely be doing a lot more detecting when the weather clears, and spring arrives. I will also post any and all finds as they are found..
