Thats 6 members concur with you sasnz. ;D
Do you feel like this bigC :BangHead: Lol

I take your word that you know your planes, it is possible that this is still one you havent seen. ;D. I have had a look at paint scrapers as well and it could possibly fit the bill but with a very short handle i think.

Mystic:

# 1. Is this Item Painted??????????
# 2. Is this item Cast?????????????
# 3. Can you tell what kind of metal this is???????????????

Plane caps can be cast iron; some are painted, some are chromed. They often have factory numbers on them. The older ones use a wood shim. Yes its possible that Im wrong. But I have sold a couple hundred and researched the books trying to ID them before I sell, so I looked at a thousand pictures probably. But I may have missed it. I dont know how 6 members could all be wrong. :D One member has three at home just like it and that may be our best bet at positive ID.

It is metal I guess a cast iron, put it don't make me really think of a cast iron pot you cook in.It is not painted but it has a slick ,but worn places in it and the bottom of the square,is not smoothed out that good,it looks like the way it was made. Here is some more pictures of the handle with the groves in it and the worn spots around the oval hole. it has a grayish, black green color.strange color to me.
thanks everybody

I looks modern to me with the casting marks. (numbers and diamond)

mystic, I noticed some of your closeups are good detail and others are blurry and worthless. It must be something you are doing wrong and not the camera. You may not be pausing to let your lens focus or you may be moving the camera.

It could be just a 'dog' clamp, like is used with metal working equip, etc to hold down material being worked, lathe, drill, tool block, etc.

Some of the last pictures had a diamond stamp that looks like DuPont to me. I think it might be a paint scrapper with the blade holder bolt missing. It is small as well, but furniture refinishing often requires small finish removers to conquer the tough spots. :-\

Ok due to the ware on the top surface of the whole which in my opinion would tighten and lock the blade into place i will put my money on a wood plane blade plate holder. Bigc I know you disagree with me but i just cant think of anything else. Do you have any suggestions that we can investigate?

Cheers Sasnz

IMO the best reference on Stanley planes is Patricks Blood and Gore if you want to search. http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0a.html http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0a.html
We cleaned out an abandoned warehouse full of antiques and hundreds of vintage planes and I became an expert overnight. :D

It may be a hand held clamp or scraper.

It looks to me that it was designed to hold a blade and the curved end to be used by hand. Although it resembles the blade holder on a wood plane. Without any other parts for reference I would have to guess paint scraper.

Go back and look at sasnz pictures of block planes. They have a smooth round part to fit under the palm of your hand. Ive seen some homeade plane parts used but this unknown item would hurt your hand if you tried to use it for a plane cap and tried to plane wood with it.

The hole is also too big. The plane caps pictured have an offset keyhole like this. plane cap.jpgIt may however be some kind of small scraper or hand clamp.

If it is a plane cap, it must be some cheap off brand or for small work or special purpose maybe and would need a washer to hold the cap on the blade with that big hole in the center. I suppose its possible although I cant recall ever seeing a plane cap that needed a washer.

Lot's of suggestions floating around. I agreed at first that it may have been a mower sickle bar guide, but after searching for them, all I could find were the 2 hole type, which have a similar shape. I'm not convinced it's a planer cap, either. It looks too "roughly cast" plus with hundreds of examples online, none matched . With the great variety of farm implements, I'm still leaning towards some type of guide, or hold down clip or clamp, specifically designed for one job. That's the problem with ID'ing parts. Many were created for one particular machine, or even model.
