It resembles a guide that was used on an old cycle bar type mowers that kept the cuycle bar itself in alignment.

on a swather?

I think I should have said sickle bar, although I have see both spellings used. At any rate, look at the picture below, and on the top side of the bar, you can see the guides I am talking about, although, the ones on this one have two bolts instead of one. I have seen both.

It does look like a wear clip or guide for a sickle - cutter bar. Could be from a hay-mower, mower conditioner, swather, binder, or combine. It does look familiar, and I have changed many a section plate and guard in my day, but the parts were slightly different in design between different manufacturers, models, and age.

I think it is top plate on a wood plane, the blade would go where you can see on the first picture, I will see if i can get a pic.

Actually, could we have a size comparison to something. A couple of us, I think, were going by the general shape, and we don't even know how big it is........doh. Assumptions, big picture, big object, hehe.

I agree with sasnz, it's the blade holder on a block plane used to smooth wood.
I have three planes with parts just like it.

I concur..top plae on wood plane.

How could so many people be wrong? :D :D  I have sold 100's of antique planes on eBay and at the flea markets and I cant recall a plane cap ever looking like this. 999slvrfx if you have one, please take a pic. Of course if the picture was a little smaller, we could see it in its entirety on the screen. ...also something for size needed.

Hi BigC, After reading your comment i decided to investigate a little further. I have included some pics of planes of Similar design, not exact design. as i am not a tool expert i thought that they were pretty close. Keeping in mind that if the site detecting is extremely old the design might be somewhat basic. I still think this item could be off a plane.

With that said a couple of things that i have noticed dont quite match to being a plane blade holder plate thingy. Firstly the item appears to be cast? not too sure but the pictures indicate that to me. The other thing and probably most importantly is that the item looks as tho it may have paint on it. If this is the case then i would rule out the plane idea. The window latch idea would be more appropriate if it is painted.

So if the poster can get the Measurements as has been asked earlier in the forum to us i think this will definately help in solving this puzzle. also it would be helpful knowing what sort of metal this is and wether it was cast or not. Knowing wether the item has been painted will also help in a huge way to rule out the tool idea.

Cheers Sasnz

Hello sasnz. It looks like you have pictured 3 Stanley block planes. The top is a No. 120. I have two just like it with the 6 point star value about $50-$100. (If it was a 5 pt. star its worth would be up to $2000). Bottom left a No. 9-1/2, and bottom right looks like No.18 or No.65, may also be a Craftsman. Like I said, I sell antique planes and have never seen a plane cap such as this, even on the older planes. You must be popular because 4 other members concurred. ;D Im not saying 100% sure, but I have never seen one and my books dont show one like this. Im waiting for 999slvrfx to post a pic of his planes. I say NOT a plane part. Red arrow shows blade(1) and to the left two types of caps(4).

I took some more pictures with a c battery and some tape for size. my battery is 2 inches long, the object is almost 4 1/2 inches long because of the curve in it.It is not sharp , it has a dimple in it at the base of the curve, shows some wear around the oval shaped hole. It has P-291 on it and a diamond shape on the back of it.the square part is curved some. I hope my pictures are not to big,I cannot get them to shrink anymore.
Thank you for your help
