What do you carry with you when you are out MDing?

Sure! Until I got the belt (which I haven't even used yet. It's frozen up here in MA), I was using this and really like it. It's just a teensy bit heavy for me. But a guy might really REALLY like it. VERY sturdy and has ALL KINDS of storage. I could fit a garden shovel AND a bottle of water in one side pocket & my pointer (and more if I had to) in the other. I tucked batteries in one little compartment. Used another with a zipper half open to tuck finds in. Then there's a HUGE central compartment I fit a GIANT horseshoe I found on the beach once. And those are just a FEW of the pockets. The thing is just packed with nooks & crannies & hooks and whatnot. I wore it swung to my front left, as I dig with my right. It has a quick release strap to snap in back around your waist so it doesn't dangle when you bend over to dig. It's a GREAT bag. Here's a link Amazon.com: Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack: Sports & Outdoors

This is the belt:

It's from a company called Bahco and it's called a Quick Release Leather Belt. (Amazon has one, but it's an XL).

Hope that helps!

Thank you.

If I'm alone and way out in the boonies, I like to have my Smith & Wesson model 60.

BTW the Condor Cross over leg rig is on order for me...but the size is nice. I used to have one when I paintballed. Yes, there are other sports besides MD'ng

Well looks like I am going to need to get busy putting all these items together. I will have me a day pack ready by this weekend with some items in it. I always have tylenol where ever I go. I have about 3 weeks before I get my metal detector so I have plenty of time to get ready. Thanks to all who have given advise on this subject. Im sure there are more things that I will find that I need that has not been posted. But please keep them coming and I will put these things in my truck when I go out. Again THANK YOU for all the help!!!

I always make sure I have a wheel barrow with a good tire so I can haul all that treasure back to my truck!

Shovel, mining pick, iron pry bar, machete, battery operated drill.

Balaclava, extra shells, police scanner, rubber gloves......What? I'm coming home with some GOLD!!

During the day, I carry a finds pouch, pinpointer on utility belt, and if not on the beach, my Lesche. If on the beach I have my sandscoop, a nice aluminum one from Reillys Treasured Gold.

If I am doing any kind of night hunting, I carry my Maxpedition Versapack, just like AnnieF posted. I always keep it in the car in case I need it. It has additional tools, such as a leatherman, batteries, and my Sig P232, Klarus XT11 flash light, and I pullout Maxpedition loaded first aid kit, but I usually keep it in the car as I am not to far ever from it.

Carrying the Versapack is a bit cumbersome, however MDing at night is no joke, especially on some of the sketchy beaches I like to detect. People using drugs, bums.....all too common. I have never had an altercation. If I see trouble, I leave, and always am looking over my shoulder.

Get one of those reflective yellow vests with "CSI" on it and they will think you are LE. And any cop that ever asks will chuckle when you tell him why.

My Daddy tough me at an early age, Never hold anything you don't have to when you are doing a job. I travel to the beach to detect in a motor home. It is my base camp. Here's me walking out to the beach top to bottom. Earphones over baseball cap with rear shade cloth, light colored T shirt, light belt with find pouch, swimming shorts- that is shorts that have a full set of pockets and a mesh lining, metal detector in right hand indexing back and forth rapidly- it is a surfmaster PI, Jet scoop that has been modified with long handle in left hand carried on left shoulder, light diving boots on feet.

Cache hunting: Same base camp parked on location. Clothing applicable to temperature, 2 Box detector in right hand, markers in pocket, ie you can't carry a shovel, the detector will pick it up. Return with shovel and PI detector alter lunch.
Note: in isolated areas, or bad areas, self defense is also carried.

In the yard hunts. Travel in old pickup to location. Clothing as applicable to area, Whites XLT in right hand, mechanics allignment probe in left hand, pinpointer in pouch. Shovel left in truck. Note: no headphones used there.

Prospecting: Motor Home, clothing similar to beach attire, Whites PI or XLT depending on location, In pouch- short prospecting pick, and pinpointer, in some areas a 3 tine rake with adjustable handle is used or a shovel.

The trick is to take everything you might need in the vehicle and only what you need with you. I usually hunt about 4 hours, stop for lunch and then hunt for 4 hours. In some locations I might spend a week on location. Frank

When I go Out , I some time I Take my old 22" who know who is in the woods ! No one take my Suff. Sanddigger

Depends on location, will determine what tools and things I'll carry.

On the beach I'll have my detector, scoop, and pouch... I like to go light and the back-up stuff stays in the Jeep.

If it's a local relic hunt, I will also go light. Pin-pointer, digging tool... with the coffee, food, and extras stay in the Jeep...
you got'a have coffee!

I will carry the most to remote locations on relic, gold prospecting, or gem hunting. I take a full size shovel, pick mattock, navigation(maps, GPS, compass), handgun... and ya got'a have coffee!

I made all my digging tools.. even my beach scoops. Not to save money, but I wanted tools that fit MY need and out last the tools that I've bought over the years from stores. They had to be the strongest possible and as light as possible... all my tools are titanium.

Thank you for all the help. L ots of great advise.

A good wad of t.p. helps in more ways than one. You can also use it to wrap good finds to prevent damage in transport.

I was wondering if I was the only one that took this :laughing7:

Finally,coffee!

Might bring the instruction manual while learning a new detector, pill bottle with padding for suspected old coins or delicate small finds. Trouble from using kitchen items comes later when cleaning some items!
