Relic Hunting
I just started hunting artifacts recently cause I saw something strange in an area on my dad's farm that has a history of many arrowheads but we don't plow or anything so over the past 25 yrs or so it was little things here and there......but now that I started digging below an over hanging rock cliff I've came up with small to large red and black painted stones of all sizes that still retain beautiful color, and scrpers to what looks like celts and axes...ALL PAINTED RED WITH BLACK MARKINGS. I've also found MANY effigy stones mainly birds and Mountain lions carved and worked into pieces from nickel size to bigger than both hands. My best pieces so far are a stone pipe that has a red bird painted inside (told it was a Thunderbird) the piece is all rock and I haven't found anything clay....I also have broken pipe pieces, an unfinished pipe (I think I can't get mud out of hole and don't think the holes connected before it was lost or something....and I'm wary of cleaning all these pieces to much. My other best pieces are what looks like a small medicine bowl the size of maybe able to hold two or three tablespoons of medicine....All stone.... that has a spout like thing smoothed into it with a bird effigy on it..on the bottom you can see heat/fire has been exposed to it... I will have pics shortly as soon as my wife wakes up to take them. This was all found in two areas on the farm... I live in Fayette County, WV close to the Gauley River...from the top of our mountain you can see the walls of the gauley....I'm guessing there must have been many panthers around (since so close to cliffs of Gauley) due to SO MANY PANTHER EFFIGY STONES I've found from quarter size to dinner plate size. Pics will be posted ASAP.

You know I thought what several of you have....but when I begin to see coincidence after coincidence and begin to see a series or sequence that is beyond explainable by nature I look for other clues/evidence. I then thought WTFO. Look, almost all these came from a 5x5 area and I felt the painted rocks were ceremonial.....this stuff is old and found in close proximity at a deeper than I thought level. I've grown up seeing weird rocks, trust me, but seeing panthers, turkeys, birds, a pipe and pieces to others with some painted... There's more to it than some saying...."Ole that's just rocks" Here's some more of a few Bird pieces I've found. Also see how they've combined several animals on one rock...the wolf and panther are on the back of the PAINTED Robin.... The Turkey is alone to the right on the next rock; and the duck head has obvious shaping to it with feather marking etched along ear area and the back is chipped to make the head as good as it is. And Explain the pipe and panther head... I'll put pics of the medicine bowl with a bird carved in it later with a few others.

Mineral stains boss IMHO but hey who knows right they just seem natural to me ;) good luck in your future hunts

What about the shaping? Pipe, Panther, Turkey, Duck head..... I'll put some more pics on in a little.

Here's some of the "medicine bowl" You'll see a bird with a crest carved on one side of top. The next pic looks sorta like a face to me or something. The last pics are of a "frog head" with a hole drilled in the bottom.... Maybe toy or for necklace....?

Welcome to the site.

If you have to continually explain what you're seeing, then you're more than likely the only one seeing it.
Look at some actual Native American artifacts/effigies ( plenty online and in museums) and there is NO doubt what they are, see the NA's were actually pretty incredible craftsmen, considering their available materials.

What you have are called geofacts.

What about the shaping? Pipe, Panther, Turkey, Duck head..... I'll put some more pics on in a little.

No, absolutely not shaped at all. They are all rocks unmodified by human hands. I bring this effigy out now and then so folks like yourself can see a genuine example. And so that you may begin to understand that people in Native American cultures were perfectly capable of "sculpturing" as well as people in any other culture. The images you are seeing, on the other hand, are simply a product of your imagination, and not artifacts at all.....

I feel there is too much coincidence.....and concentration of everything. And the Pipe, Really!? That's a geofact? Or the carved Panther Head?, The Robin/wolf/panther stone.... The snake on the rock with the buck underneath..... Maybe better pics will help. I would bet hard cash most of the things I'm pointing out is indeed real, albeit VERY OLD and faded. Wait till you see my tools....I still have things to make my case. Hand axes, scrapers, axe/tomahawk and others... Does not anyone else see what I see, everyone I show in person is like WOW!!! I think I'm digging at a ceremonial site....there are large rocks scattered semi-circle around close to overhang.... I'm digging there next. Please relook at the pics and tell me I'm 100% WRONG. I may be going crazy though....I've been in sum ****... IED and being shot.

I'm just saying mine may be soo crude do to age

No, that's not the case at all. They are not effigies. They are similar to seeing images in clouds, that's all. Hundreds of years of combined collecting artifacts experience on this forum. Resistance is futile:laughing7:

You asked for opinions and are getting a lot of experienced peoples answers, this isn't the first time we have seen geofacts posted where somebody sees random images or shapes. Mother Nature creates some odd things that look man made but in fact aren't. Nobody on here is trying to be rude. It is just that nobody with experience is seeing what you are seeing and arguing that they just aren't looking hard enough will probably end up closing them off to helping you instead of encouraging them to look harder. Just because things were found together doesn't mean they are all ancient painted items, rather it could be a good clue that they were all stained by nature at roughly the same time, thus the similarities.

Some to look over again....and sum new ones... I think the snake rock is more noticeable once rotated..... I'll get better pics of that stone cause it has many small carvings of birds that won't show on cell phone.... And the wings of the bird in the Pipe extend up on the insides of the walls.... Mother nature out did herself if these all are rocks and then thrown in almost a single hole.... And If EVERYONE can't see that turkey in the one stone.... Holy ****!!!

Thanks for the links Charl!! Interesting stuff. I'll surely be looking into and researching some of the info. I guess I have one hell of a honey-hole of "portable rock art" :laughing7: Hopefully someone would wanna buy sum of my "Rock Art"...... I'm not giving up yet though!! and I for sure wanna explore other avenues of finding cool stuff from coins to bones (not human). Thanks for all the input.... I wasn't trying to be stubborn, I guess it's how I was trained and approach things based on observation and coincidence.

First off thank you for serving, I don't know if anyone did yet... I appreciate the freedom to dig half pieces of matchbox cars and keep them in random spots in my house haha. I am not experienced at all in any Indian artifacts. I do see some of the things you are talking about. You need a better camera though cause you may be able to see what you are talking about since you have them in person but we just see colored rocks. I give you credit for not getting snippy in your posts after everyone keeps telling you they are just rocks (which they might be) and you don't know what you are looking at. Even if they aren't anything special it's awesome to find stuff, clean it up, and research it. Good luck and happy hunting.

Thank you for the kind words.... We do (Veterans) appreciate that. And no I don't get snippy or anything...it does nothing productive. I was in the USMC for 6 yrs and have scars both visible and not.. I have been shot and IED. And Yes I feel the Beckley VA does an excellent job taking care of vets. I just recently had titanium removed from me that was in me for several years.....They still trying to fix me from a severe gun shot to the jaw area....I've had probably 6 surgeries to jam me up....it's all cosmetic to me and I don't give a ****....I just appreciate God spared my life that instant....Doc's said it was a 1 in a million I didn't loose consciousness, or go into shock.....the bullet stopped thru my sinus cavity against my brian cavity and did not fracture it...it was a Miracle I believe....Maybe that contributes to the odd and beautiful things I see in life now that I took for granted before.

I do not post on this forum much but this one compelled me. Rocks aside, it is Heroes like you that have made this Country what it is and for that I Thank You!!!!! I really hope you figure out this amazing hobby and I for one will be honored to help any way I can.

You have some natural iron ore fragments on those last photos. They can appear to be carve but aren't. See the problem is I like rocks as well as artifacts its like the best of both worlds when you actually find a real artifact cause they enjoyed colorful rocks when they had the time to find them and work them. They being Native American Indians. HH, rock

Thank you for your sacrifices....Our country is lucky to have individuals like you that are still willing to fight for us.You are truly the purest example of what makes this country great. Not its government but its people. Thanks again....mjm
