I'm thinking about upgrading my digital camera so was looking for some feedback on what you use and how you like it or hate it.

Currently I was looking at the Pentax Optio WG-2 since it sounds rather rugged. Shockproof, crushproof, coldproof and dustproof...all the companies claims. I also like the fact that it has a microscope feature which may come in handy when photographing coins if it works well. The camera I currently have is rather old and I would never take it out in to the field detecting because I know it would never make it back alive. Everything I take with me hardcore detecting trip comes back dirty.

So what do you think and do you have a better solution. I have a price range in mind but lets hear all your suggestions.

Thanks

I have a Richoe CX4...or should I say had, as I left it in my beach shorts on holiday and then went on a jetski :laughing7: so although a great camera, they don't like salt water.:laughing7: Will be getting another though, very good macro, and compact. Cost about $110.

I took this picture of the saxon sceat I found earlier this year with it.

N.J.THer, Glad you mentioned one camera so I know what you are looking for. Here are the latest in the type you are looking for, Olympus TG-1 iHS- Waterproof, shockproof, crushproof and freezeproof, PENTAX WG-2 waterproof, dust cold shock proof The HERO-3 is also this type of camera although primarily made for video, it is great for stills and has a long list of accessories. My suggestion is to stop in your favoritr mag. store and brouse the camera mag rack. Good luck , Frank

I have the Panasonic waterproof, dustproof, etc. camera. My exact model has been discontinued, but they have the newest version available. 720HD video and 12MP photo. It's a great little camera that goes everywhere with me without fear of damaging it.

Most digital cameras will give you a good general picture, but for detecting you do need one with a good Macro for close up shots, or insitu pictures...

Very good point! The Panasonic does good macro, both photo and video.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I want a good Macro setting but I also want one that I don't have to worry about breaking it in the field.

I use a Nikon Coolpix L22. It does a tolerable job. My opinion might be jaundaced, because before I bought it, I had been using a Nikon F3 and a Hasselblad C500 and so was used to those systems. The Coolpix has a peculiar macro, in that I was used to getting very close-up to my subject with my F3, with this model I do better setting it to macro, then getting far away from it and crankin the telephoto up. Weird.
