Was heading to a site I detected yesterday and decided to take a short cut because of traffic, boy am I glad I did!!!!! As I rounded the corner I saw some people at a house that were getting rid of everything . The sign in the front yard said free stuff. So I stopped not knowing what I was about to get into! Not only was there some good stuff sitting outside but there was a constuction size dumpster full of stuff as well. I confronted the owners and they informed me that there mother who lived in the house was put into a nursing home and they were just cleaning up and everything in the yard was free as well as what was in the dumpster. So to my complete enjoyment I "dove right in" the dumpster that is and started coming out with all sorts of goodies! First it was all the magazines Time, Life, News Week, US news, and a lot more all dating back into the 1930's I still have boxes in the car I havent got out yet. Then there were the pendants, post cards, tin photos, old news paper clippings, a skateboard from the 60's, old books dating to the late 1800's. And to top it all off I found "The Sucrets Tin Box" which I almost past up. Inside were WW II buttons, medals, skeleton key, wheat penny from 1918, 1 Franc 1938, a few other coins that I can't make out yet and a "copy" of a Roman coin I think. I am probably leaving out a few things but man was that worth the short cut. I found military buttons and didn't even have to dig in the ground! By the way I didn't get to look through thewhole dumpster so I am going back in the morning after I drop my daughter off at school. Also I am posting a pic of the stuff I found yesterday at the site I was suposed to go to today!

Excellent finds !!! Every now and again I get to rummage through a barn. Lots of old neat stuff usually comes out.

Show us more !! VPR

Wow! Nice saves. It just amazes me that people won't take a few minutes and make a couple of calls to a couple of antique dealers and sell some of that stuff before they throw it away. They could have paid for a couple of months of granny's stay with what they were getting rid of. You found some nice items. WTG

very nice finds, very nice way of keeping history alive. I'm almost amazed at how people toss off the years since the computer age began. It's like no one cares about what our grandparents/parents/ ourselves lived thru.....or with. Now it seems to run past way to fast to enjoy. What happened?

One man's trash....Another man's treasure.Any book's?,check within the page's..$$$$.Awesome shortcut, keep us posted on what you come up with.

awesome finds !!! you found alot of history there ;)

It always amazes me that some people don't consider that older things may have value. When my great great aunt and uncle passed away, my grandfather was going to just have a big dumpster set in the yard and hire someone to dump everything into it.

My father and uncle convinced him to go through the house themselves first and then hire an auction service to auction the rest off.

In their "little" search, they found native american artifacts found during the many years of farming the fields and also came across a box with several gold coins and other older coins.

The auction itself took in over $70K total - my grandfather was stunned that people would pay so much for stuff that he considered "junk."

Nice job finding all those things - go through them slowly and if you find any books, make sure you go through them well as some folks would hide paper money in them.

Grats on a fun day!

Super haul. I can't believe what people throw away. Good luck. I hope you find more goodies.

I replied to your second post as well. Had to come see this one too to find out the story. So sad....these people just didn't give a crap about history! What utter disrespect! Just putting my two cents in. I would offer a few of the war trinkets (photos, medals and such) to a local VFW branch. At least they will be out there for alot of folks to enjoy and learn from! Congrats to you again on an awesome opportunity! I know you are having a ball digging through it all. You were put there for a reason ;)
