Well,

I did it! I found my first gold yesterday at a public park in my area. I had a post/poll recently that alot of you participated in which was asking everyone how long it was before they found their first gold item. Right away everyone was offering advice as to where they find most of their gold items. SO,...I took everyone's advice ( Thanks Jeff!) and searched a park in my neighborhood that has a small lake for swimming. I found this gold earring on the shoreline in about 2" of soil. What a neat feeling! To see that pretty shiny thing pop up out of the muck.

I found a bunch of clad yesterday as well. This is the first time I've hunted in fresh water and I was a bit surprised at the condition of the coins? Look at the photos and if anyone can tell me what that black stuff is I'd be very appreciative :)

Also, take a look at that penny I have there! I'm guessing this is caused by electrolysis? Not sure? any help on this one?

Finally, I found a 38 special bullet! Kind of a strange thing to find in a public park? Unfired at least :) My question on this one is the lettering on the casing. W W ? Not sure what company that is? I know that S&W is Smith and Wesson but I'm not familiar with W W ? Any help on this one would be great as well.

OK, I hope everyone likes the picks. Use the last link if you want to see more. OH,...almost forgot! I will add another pica that shows all the clad I've found this week. I've had fun even if it is just clad :)

Here are 2 images of a curious item I found the other day while hunting a home that was built in the early 1940's. I could be wrong but I think it is part of a very old bicycle tire innertube. I can remember when I was a kid that they used to have a brass fitting of this size and approximate shape for the valve. If anyone can confirm or deny this please comment as I'm curious what this actually is. I could just be junk. Here it is:

Ahh, ok. I wasn't aware WW was still marked on ammo today, but as I said..."I'm not an expert". Is western still marked on the boxes too?

Congrats on your first gold Darod!
Now get out there in the waist to neck deep water and post some pics of gold rings

Among my many hobbies prior to getting interested in metal detecting I am a shooter and reloader of about 40 years experience. What you found is a cartridge, not just a bullet. The bullet is in the cartridge case and as someone correctly identified it, thd bullet is what is known as a wad cutter. It is designed for target shooting so as to cut a perfectly round hole in the target for easy scoring in a shooting match. The WW does indeed stand for Winchester-Western and it is a brand that is still in use today. The cartridge could date anywhere from the late 1940's upward. There is really no way to tell exactly. It is a pretty common type cartridge and really has no collector value except to you I'm sure. The cartridge is probably inert after being underground, but I would handle it with the respect you would give to any other cartridge. It is not dangerous, but could contain live powder. I wouldn't recommend trying to shoot it in a gun. Congrats on your first gold find, I am still anxiously waiting but haven't been at this metal detecting business except for a few weeks.JIM

There are some many parks in my area. It seems that everyday I think of another one and go there to find clad all over the place! I spend 30 minutes today at another park (my first time there) and found 3 dimes and 37 pennies. It's a lot of fun!

Congrats on the gold, !! I think your unknown is an upper portion to a tube of acrylic paint , like for artists., the old ones were lead.. even in the seventies,,, ;D
