Re: British Sword hanger? NEW pics..

If you dont respond, this post will just fade away. :( Its too bad because anytime members find 2 or more of the exact item, its usually solvable.

I don't have any scissors that would be reasonable to photograph for this post.. The only ones I have are a big fat pair that aren't anywhere close to the intended size (if it is a hanger) I asked a couple neighbors and they don't have them either.. I appreciate your help with this one, just not worth it to me to buy a pair of those scissors

OK no problem. 8) Sorry to be pushy. I thought everyone had scissors. Ill take your response as it doesnt fit.

If someone is able to photoshop overlay the pairs that I posted, I think we will eliminate scissors as a possibility. Like you say, its not even close with a large pair. It would have to be a tiny pair and I believe it would not fit either. I spent several hours researching and Im losing interest too..

Re: British Sword hanger? NEW pics..

I believe this is a Victorian era picture rail hook. They can be very ornate.

Do a Google images search on "Picture rail hook" and you'll see them. I didn't find any EXACTLY like this one, but I can see how the wire or cable would loop over the top prongs then inside the bottom tabs to hold securely.

I think you're right :icon_thumleft: let me see what a couple others think

Re: British Sword hanger? NEW pics..

I agree 100% with DCMatt - Early to mid Victorian era picture rail hook. I think the wire was looped over the top hooks then between the lower ones for security so that a heavier or costlier picture could not be jarred off the hook or skewed accidentally and/or slid along the rail for positioning.

thanks for the reply :icon_thumleft: I think you both are right.. it makes the most sense of anything I've heard.. a couple suggested the idea, but didn't go into as much detail. thanks

It looks stamped, not engraved. The crown look more German than Brit. Not beefy enough for a sword hanger... maybe a picture hanger? :dontknow:

A pic of the whole thing would help.

I go through Rolla every now and then. I really enjoy the Ozarks.

That one has a chrysanthemum, so prob. mid-1870's onward (Aesthetic Movement/Japan mania).

I think the crown is just a crown motif with like no significance.

BTW a lot of the picture "wires" from this era were fancy cords with tassels.

Hats off to Turtlefoot for the ID. :notworthy:

Lucas - you made the id with the second post. I just had too much time on my hands to play on Google images. Hat's off to you!
