Greeting again from the Netherlands. The potato crop is starting to come out and I'm getting back to some places that have given up some nice medieval finds. I braved the rain today to hunt a freshly harvested part of a field. Found the normal stuff - coin from the 1600's, clothes fasteners, lead bale seals, musket balls, etc. and then this popped out of the ground.

I've dug a lot of rings (mostly horse tack) in a lot of places but nothing like this. It is solid and came out of the ground just like this. My best guess is that it is brass. There is no green bronze disease so I'm pretty sure it is not bronze.

I've looked at what is called "Ring Money" and all the examples I can find that are this thick and big are made by bending a rod into a circle. This one was not bent and there is little evidence of a sprue of a size needed to cast something of this size. So I'm stumped.

Any help, guidance, or similar finds would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Daryl

I didn't here anybody rule out it being Norse. Me personally, I think its a petrified mini Krispy Kreme...j/k No really, I think if it is brass, it would be sailing apparatus of sorts.

To add to the "Mystery" of the object, I sent photos and measurements to the Archeologist in Amsterdam. This was his reply:

Dear Dr. Adams,

Don’t have a clue, doesn’t look familiar to anything we find in town here, maybe older prehistoric.

So it could be.

I don't think so anymore, I am pretty sure I know what it is, but the data is on my computer back home (In England searching at this moment). Over two weeks I will come back to this subject...

Not so hot with the finds, a few hammered and silver roman, and various other stuff, but not yet on our favorite lands. Yesterday only 5 hours searching, and almost free of showers, today got caught out in the rain a few times, later in the afternoon it cleared up and was nice. Cool though, we are not used to that here in September. A lot of our spots are hunted by others too, some not legally. We have one great farmer with many farms and much land, he has troubles with nighthawkers and then we too. We go to some land from last year and footprints all over. We are the only ones allowed on his land. Searching now with the Deus, two of us have one, tomorrow giving mine to a club member and going back to my GMP. He wants to try it out. I don't see really much difference in finds between the two. On bad point, the thin headphones let all the sounds from outside in, masking some faint finds. Don't like that and today was huge with wind, almost blew over the side of some hills!

Weather should be getting better and better as the week goes, as you know.
Greetings..earl

Well, might as well add my 2 cents worth, How about a cinch ring? You know, threaded onto two strings, reins, small ropes, jewelry chains, etc.? To draw them together at the middle. I have no pics or links, but you all know what I mean.......NGE

UPDATED!

Well I got back OK from England, the weather there was wonderful for both weeks, compared to the weather back home in Holland (rain, rain, rain).
Anyway I received a message from one of the people who do the determination of relics in an organization in the west of the land (Friesland). He knew definitely what it was. On old Friesian clocks that had a chain to pull the clock weight up (winding up the clock) and these items hung on the end of the chain and people pulled on them to raised the clock weight.

Since this is the second time I have received the same information about this item I think its been correctly determined. Pity that I had received the email in England and lost it somewhere along the line, he mentioned which sort of clock it was also. I am still looking for the email mail, but I don't really think I can find it anymore. I have also tried to find a painting with such a clock but have not yet. Still looking for the stuff though.

I will return when I have more information.

I have seen (through Daryl) another relic that is exactly the same, only the color is different. Looking at the color I could believe that the relic could be solid silver. Here is the photo of the other find.

Funny fact is that that this relic was also found in the same town as the from Daryl. Trying to contact the finder now, he lives just a few km's from me.

Sorry, yesterday the computer was acting up, loaded the wrong photo. Here both of the relics together.
