The secret is not giving a crap about what others think. Their opinions don't matter. If you don't like what I'm doing, it's a good idea to keep to yourself about.

I was at a family gathering at my parents last weekend and me, my brother and nephew brought or detectors so that I could give them some tips. My 30 year old niece thought it was funny to call us geeks and make jokes at our expense. Now normally this wouldn't bother me, because I'm a bit of a jokester and cut up myself. But, she has quite a bad habit of speaking before she thinks. So she finally gets enough curiosity built up to look in my "treasure box", finds a nice ring (that fits) and asks "Can I have this one?".
I don't think a full second went by when she got my reply......."Nope".
I walked away smiling.

.... I hate to tell you this but here in the USA .... They look at us Detectorist's as geeks and idiot's........... It is not a proud thing to be seen swinging a detector.......

Well,.....yeah but....(LOL).....I was out a few weeks ago in the park that I do about 70% of My hunting in (It's BEEN a park since 1884) and
a Dad and his little girl (She "looked" about 8yrs old) walked by Me as I was swingin' and I heard the kiddo ask "Daddy, what's that man doing?".

"Dad" answered (They just don't seem to think that we can hear them with the headphones on...lol)..."He's looking for treasure with some
pretty cool gear". I was thinkin'...."Yeah, I'm cool".......lol

see what i mean when a similar thing happened to me the dad said to the child dont worry its just a geek thats got no money honey hes a down and out then he gave the child £1 and she threw it on the ground hey its an eye find isnt it

I only "model" cat-suits on the beach, usually Monday through Friday.
Winter time "cat-suit" is covered by full length mary jane.
The wearing kind........

You guys do realize I'm almost 50 yrs old, married, and have grandchildren, don't you?

All too often, many MD'ers look the part! In that I mean, that we (the guys that is) are either too skinny and tall with glasses or too fat and balding with glasses and most with a variety of accessories hanging off our' belts. Work out, get a tan and dress in cut-off jeans and a tight t-shirt to show off your' pecks and see how many folks will think you are a geek or nerd. I once and yes I said once, was fairly buff when I was in my late 20's and early 30's and while MD'ing a beach located next to a Hotel and Resort at night and while wearing the above, a drop-dead gorgeous and slightly tipsy lady approached me and asked "Do you ever find anything with that thing?" to which I stated "Well it found you didn't it!". When I finished that statement, she nearly jumped me right there. She then gathered her composure, stated that she had had too much to drink and bid me good night. Needless to say, I turned off the metal detector and rushed home to take a cold shower! This was just one of quite a few similar encounters that I had while metal detecting but it was the most memorable.

Ummm- - well I don't know 'bout everyone else, but here in my neck of the woods we are considered eccentric & kinda crazy. Most people look down on it. So I am hoping all these shows will build up our rep & make TH'ing a little easier.
