UPDATE!!! What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

I went down to south Florida in hopes that the recent winds and waves might of uncovered some old shipwreck stuff. Well, although I really didn't do well on the shipwreck stuff I did find this little piece. I took it to my jeweler friend this morning and he checked it out to make sure it was real. After inspecting it and testing the gold on it, he determined it's a Rolex 18k gold and stainless sub-mariner and it works pefectly. I'm so excited!!! I had never seen a Rolex let alone thought of owning one. He told me this watch goes for somewhere between 7 and 8 thousand bucks. I guess my hobby has paid for it's self. I'm planning on keeping it for myself because I always give away all my other stuff. Here are some pics.

I just added a picture of the watch after the new bezel insert and a cleaning (please excuse my thumb print, I didn't see it till after the cam was put away). My Jeweler said it should last me a lifetime with proper care. To bad it sits in my safe, but I will wear it out for those special nights.

Wow!!!!!!! now that is one fantastic find indeed and I thought a few years back I was doing good finding my measly Pulsar in a ballfield. It was ticking and an inch in the dirt, at the time my pocket watch had taken a crap on me and I rigged the Pulsar up as a pocket watch and am still using it today!

Re: What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

I wore a Rolex like that one for 18 yrs and the last time I had it cleaned and a new crystal face installed it was $400 and I knew it was time to sell it. Too much high maintenance over the years. Wait, if the band wears out, check with your jeweler on how much that will be to replace it and have a place to sit down when he tells you! Nice find though.

Re: What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

Did your friend the jeweler, say how old it was. Just curious as to how long you or he thought it had been buried. Also, I was under the impression that when someone buys a Rolex, the watch is registered with Rolex in the new owners name. Since I dont own one I just wondered, because if you ever take it to an auth. Rolex dealer they may do a check with Rolex? But that is a heck of a find though. Congrats

Re: What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

I know Rolex does register the watches. He said if someone were to make a claim on the watch the insurer could come after me for it. We did run the serial numbers through Rolex and found it's age. It's older than ten years. I'd rather not say the exact age. The watch had been in the water a long time. It had serious coral growth on it. I figure that it was most likely an international tourist because of the area it was found. Which makes it very likely they just wrote it off. Either way, I looked through several lost adds for that watch's serial numbers and nobody has reported it or any set of numbers close.

Re: What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

I found a watch once, a hundred dollar one! I still have it but it's no Rolex! I use to have a girlfriend that managed a jewelry store and she use to let me try them on, said I could finance it just like a car! I hinted she should buy me one, but she never took the hint and besides it was a years pay for the diamond incrusted one I wanted! Great find! Monty

Great find, and you've done your part. Get your jeweler buddy to do the majic on it, and enjoy the watch.

You're killing us! Be sure and post a picture of your refurbished Rolex. Show us the beauty!

Re: What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

Man, that's a BEAUTY! I too will be waiting to see how the re-furbishing went.

I want to commend you on your honesty in researching for an owner. I personally feel it's the right thing to do BUT (Slightly OFF TOPIC) more than that it's a real important thing to do "Legally".

Police (and our court system) consider a valuable lost item as still belonging to the loser. If no attempt is made to find the owner we, the finder, can be prosecuted for theft. Of course, realistically, this only becomes significant if we try to sell the item and there is a "loser" looking for the item.

In all of the 50 states there is a requirement to turn in "valuable" items to the police and after a certain length of time it becomes ours LEGALLY. Valuable can be defined from $100 and on up.

I've probably found a couple dozen items considered 'valuable' but I prefer trying to find the owner myself. I use CraigsList and consider the find MINE after 90 days. Very old items (5 years+) I consider unreturnable as are unmarked items.

Great Find 'Hangingfor8!' - well done mate - I'm off to the beach this weekend - hoping I'll be just as lucky!
My friends Lynda, Dave and Mick sent me a picture of the rolex via email before I saw this thread (Mick have you joined yet???).
All the best,
David UK

Re: What time is it.... It's Rolex time!!!

Congratulations on a terrific find ! :o You've inspired me to go hit the beach this morning. Haven't been there in months and out of the half dozen times I've detected any beaches I've ended up with a total of 11 cents.....lol!
Hope the snowbirds have left some goodies behind this time!
